Mortgage of Henry de Vere to John de Lacy, Constable of Ches

Dear Newsgroup ~

The charter below was found in the helpful online A2A Catalogue
(http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp). The chief parties involved
in the document include Henry de Vayr (presumably Vere intended) and
John de Lacy, Constable of Chester (prior to him becoming Earl of
Lincoln). The property is the manor of Wadenhoe, Northamptonshire,
which research indicates was subsequently exchanged by Edmund de Lacy,
Earl of Lincoln, in 1254 with Roger de Quincy, Earl of Winchester, for
the manors of Kippax and Scholes, Yorkshire [Reference: John Parker ed.
Feet of Fines for the County of York from 1246 to 1272 (Yorkshire Arch.
Soc. Record Series 82) (1932): 193].

The list of the witnesses includes Gilbert de Clare, Earl of
Gloucester, and William de Mandeville, Earl of Essex. I presume these
men were related to either Henry de Vere or John de Lacy, or both of
them.

Is anyone able to identify Henry de Vere? I see Jim Weber's great
website (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bi ... ?db=jweber)
has an Henry de Vere, of Thrapston, Northamptonshire whose paternal
grandmother was a Clare. IS this the right man?

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Why? And why not also the other witnesses, "Sir R. de Grelley, Sir
Thos. de Muleton, Sir Osbert Giffard, etc."? (The last is especially
interesting, of course, and could be the subject of a new correction to
CP, linking the great families of Vere, Lacy and Etcetera.)
