The entry below (from PROCat) concerns John Gifford's investors, the
Eatons and Dodsworths. I think it proves that Katherine, wife of John
Dodsworth, was daughter of John and Katherine Eaton, being
"administratrix de bonis non" to her father and executrix to her
mother. Does anybody know what is the correct date of the regnal year
34 Charles II?

[E 134/34Chas2/Mich23.] James Zouch v. John Dodsworth and his wife
Katherine, Joseph Harding, Ann Baker.: John Eaton and Katherine his
wife (to whom defendant Katherine is administratrix de bonis non to
John, and executrix to his wife). Touching a debt owing by Edwd. Zouch
(plaintiff's elder brother) to John Eaton, and charged upon plaintiff,
but for only a part of which debt plaintiff owns his liability, &c.,
&c.: Surrey [34 Chas 2].

Charles II's reign commenced de jure 30 January 1649 [1648/9 for
pedants].

34 Charles II is therefore 30 January 1682 to 29 January 1683.

If the "Mich23" in the reference is to Michaelmas term, then it will be
the latter part of 1682.

Thank you. I was guessing that they ignored the Interregnum in this
style of dating.

Yes, or 34 Charles II would take us into the reign of William & Mary!

I have a handy list of regnal dates mounted on the study wall, taken
from Osborn's Concise Law Dictionary. It is a very valuable dating
aid. Perhaps there is an online equivalent somewhere which would be
worth bookmarking.

Cheers
