Armorial Shields in the Old Library Windows

The Old Library was built in two parts, the first and western part in
1431 by Thomas Chace (Master 1412-28), the second and eastern half in
1477 by Robert Abdy (Master 1477-96). These two men were of course
assisted by other donors - Chace by Richard Clifford and Abdy by
William Gray and George Neville. Probably the shields represent some
of the subscribers, but not much is known of their actual gifts.
Originally the shields had Latin mottos in honour of the persons
represented and often an inscription indicating the donor of the
window. All these disappeared when the Library was modernised by James
Wyatt in 1792.

very old Cheshire family; he married Margaret Stafford, the only
daughter and heiress of Sir James Stafford of Sandon, Staffs of
similar ancient lineage. Argent a bend sable (Erdeswick) argent, on
chevron gules five bezants (gold coins) (Stafford)

Does anyone know about the marriage of Thomas ERDESWICKE and Margaret
STAFFORD? He was living in 1338. Thomas's descendant was Sampson ERDESWICKE
Historian of Staffordshire. Was Thomas descended from Richard de Vernon
Baron of Shipbrooke?
