Assistance sought with a Latin phrase

Legg inn av Gjest » 28 sep 2005 00:57:02

Even though the MI of this individual falls outside the parameters of the
medieval period I am still hoping someone can confirm a literal translation of
"illustri inter Cestrenses familia oriundi" which appears in a transcript of
the MI of ancestor which was forwarded to me from a staff member of Christ
College in Brecon, Brecknockshire. The individual buried in the chapel at
Christ College was Roger Mainwaring (b. 9 Nov. 1589 - d. 1 Jul. 1653), Bishop of
St. David's. Does that Latin phrase above imply he was from Cheshire himself,
from a Cheshire family, or something else entirely? Thanks for any
assistance.

"from a family of illustrious origin among those of [name of a people ;
Cestrenses = from Cheshire ?]"

In my view, strictly speaking, it means that his family is from Cheshire
but it does not say anything about him.

"illustri inter Cestrenses familia oriundi"

= born of a distinguished Cheshire family
