Robert de Erdeswyke was in the Retenu of Lord Talbot at Agincourt. How can I locate other information on this Erdeswyke family. Is this the same Talbot family , that held the title Earl of Shrewsbury. See Agincourt Rolls.

There are a few 15th century references to be found by looking at the
A2A data base of catalogues <http://www.a2a.org.uk/>,(soon to be
<http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a>) and a few further but later -
Tudor and Stuart - references to be found on PROCAT
<http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/>(under the spelling Erdeswick).

There is also a nice ms on the British Library Catalogue:
Wolley Charter v.31, Defeasance of Bond, Latin
Original date Monday after St Barnabus the apostle, 8 Henry IV
Modern date 13 June 1407
Contents Defeasance and counter-defeasance by Thomas de Erdeswyke and
Thomas de Marchynton, of bonds for £200 in which they were mutually
bound, for performance of covenants touching the marriage of Nicholas,
son of the said Thomas de Marchynton, with Joan, daughter of the said
Thomas de Erdeswyke.
Endorsement Thomas de Marchyntonto Thomas de Erdeswyke.
Bibliography ~Dictionary of British Arms. Medieval Ordinary~, i, p.322
- impaled by Stafford, Ar. on chevron gu, 5 roundels, window, Library,
Balliol College, Oxford; Birch, Catalogue of Seals in the Department of
Manuscripts in the British Museum, vol. ii, p.766.
Grantors Thomas de Erdeswyke [of co. Staff.]
Grantees Thomas de Marchynton [Marchington]
Seals Pendent Red wax, round; a shield of arms: for Erdeswyke, or on a
chevron gules five bezants, within a carved starlike panel of 6 points,
each having in the cusped interspaces a circular countersunk opening
bearing one of the following letters in order, N A V T A L;
insscription ... : ERDIISW... ; within a beaded border; very fine,
repaired.
Full list of places Marchynton [Marchington, co. Staff.]

The British Library Manuscripts catalogue
<http://molcat.bl.uk/msscat/INDEX.ASP> also contains a reference to the
will of Richard Erdeswicke of London, merchant, 1580 (Add. ms 34815, f.
308) but you should also check for other spellings.

The family does not seem to turn up in the records of the Prerogative
Court of Centerbury (also available on the
<http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/> site see Documentsonline) till
the downloadable will of Sampson Erdeswick or Erdeswicke of Sandon,
Staffordshire dated 6 October 1603 (PROB 11/102).

You should be able to track down the family in the heralds'
visitations. The Erdeswicke family of Sandon, Staffordshire appear in
the 1583 visitation of the county. Apparently branches also turn up in
the London visitation of 1568 and the Cheshire visitation of 1612-4 and
the Leicester visitation of 1619. Try looking in "The Visitation of
Staffordshire 1583", ed Grazebrook, William Salt Arch Soc, iii, pt 2,
1883; "The Visitation of London 1568", ed Howard & Armytage, Harleian
Soc, i, 1869); The Visitation of the County of Leicester 1619", ed
Featherston, Harleian Soc, 2, 1870; "Pedigrees ... the Visitation of
Cheshire 1613", ed Armytage & Rylands, Harleian Soc, lix, and Lancs &

Hi,

Sorry! This is a question concerning the Talbots, rather than a reply to Le
Bateman's post..

I have found several books/theses that give conflicting dates for events
concerning the Talbots. For instance:-

1] The death of Sir Gilbert Talbot, 5th lord Talbot.

One source states that he was seriously wounded in 1416 while crossing the
river Vire, but returned to England and died at Goodrich in 1417. Another
says that he died at Rouen on 19th October 1418.

2] The death of 1st wife of Sir John Talbot, 6th lord Talbot, and
subsequently 1st earl of Shrewsbury.

One source states that Maud died in the autumn of 1420. Another names his
1st wife as Margaret (wrong) and states that she died on
the 31st May 1422.

It would save me a lot of time searching through original sources if someone
could tell me the correct dates (and locations), please (with references)?

Adrian
