Cuthbert Ogle, Rector 1475 to 1546

I have an abstract of Cuthbert Ogle's will, originated in 1540. It is
particularly interesting since he has a group of five trustees to handle his
affairs which obviously include four sons and a "wife" designated as his servant.
He was a master of diplomacy.

I would appreciate suggestions as to where I can locate a source for his
will. He owned many properties in Northumberland and was Rector of Ingram,
Ilterdon, Ford, Bothal, and Stanhope.

Thank you so much for any help.

As an owner of many properties, he is quite likely to have been dealt with
by P.C.C. or P.C.Y.

PCC wills can be purchased online at (but I can't see his will) at:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

For PCY, see:

http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr/Guidesa ... ngaids.htm

You might have to contact the Borthwick Institute.

However, if the properties were all within the jurisdiction of a single
lower court, you might find the wills there. Most of Northumberland was
covered by the Consistory Court of Durham. The originals are held at the
University of Durham.

If I understand correctly, the Northumberland Record Office only has a 1540
index, not a film of any of the probate:

http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/%5Cdrftp%5C5401.asp

So you might have to enquire at the University of Durham:

http://flambard.dur.ac.uk/dynaweb/guide ... ter(ID(AUC))

Make sure that, in any enquiry, you refer to PROBATE rather than just
WILL. If you ask for a will, that may be all you'll get. If you ask for
probate, you'll get the will plus any other documents (bonds,
inventory,admin) that may be available.

BUT easy option ...

The other option is to check out the LDS. They seem to have filmed all the
Durham probate. The index is on FHL British Film 0090802 - but your will, if
it was proved at Durham, would have to be on film 0090805. That would cost
you under £5 to order at your local FHC ... so might be worth taking a
chance on!

What I would do is: email the Northumberland Office and see whether they
will check their 1540 index for free (or, if not, try asking on the local
Rootsweb list whether someone do a lookup) ... and, if the will is listed
there, order the film at the FHC.

The will may have been proved in the Prerogative Court of York. Indexes to
the earlier wills, including the date which you mention, were printed by the
Yorks. Archaeological Society (Record Series). Maybe someone else on the
group has access to a copy? (I am uncertain whether the indexes are
online). If you find your man in the indexes, you will need to liaise with
the Borthwick Institute in York to obtain a copy. If the will was not
proved in P.C.Y., it may have been proved in the Consistory Court of Durham.
