I'm trying to establish the wife of the above-named person.
Roger was born about 1220 at Warkworth Castle, Northumberland, the son of
Sir John fitz Roger de Warkworth and his wife Ada de Baliol. In Jim Weber's
website http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm
cgi?op=GET&db=jweber&id=I10642 he has Isabel de Merlay, daughter of Roger II
de Merlay of Morpeth as the wife of Roger fitz John.
Leo's Genealogics website has her as Isabel de Dunbar, and there was a
discussion to this effect on Gen-Med in October and November last year.
Could someone please clarify this?
Best wishes

Dear Merilyn,

The Isabel de Dunbar identification is correct.

The definitive work (preceding that of MichaelAnne Guido and
others on SGM) was Andrew B. W. MacEwen. See his work cited below [1].

I show two almost-contemporaneous ladies, Isabella (widow of
Roger de Merlay, m. 2ndly to Sir Adam de Everingham) and Isabella de
Merlay (dau. of Roger and Isabella), who married 1stly Robert de Eure,
and 2ndly before 12 May 1271 to Robert de Somerville. Neither of
these would be a fit, irregardless.

Hope this is helpful.

John

Thankyou John. Jim's database has the family connecting with the Dunbars
several generations further back through Julia de Dunbar, but obviously a
lot of work has been done on this family since he entered this configuration
in his database.
Best wishes
Merilyn
