As noted in another thread, the main line of the Essex Coggeshalls, who
feature in the ancestry of the Prince of Wales; both his wives; Sarah,
Duchess of York, and the Countess of Wessex, are descended from the
marriage of John de Coggeshall and Sara de Plumbergh. This corrects
the statement found elsewhere that Sara was the wife of Sir Jordan le
Brun.

The Plumberghs were Essex tenants in chief during the time of Henry III
and Edward I. A tentative stemma follows:

1. Thomas de Plumberghe alis Plumberche: writ 11 April 31 Henry III:
Laurence his son is his heir, aged 30 and more; land at Sutton and
Plumberch [Plumborough, Essex - MAR]; died seised of the marsh of Magna
Rogewerde: Christiana his wife took the profits thereof to the use of
the said Thomas until death; he died seised of Bekener and Lovedone,
Langeleg wood and 20 acres of land at Rocheford: they fall to Laurence
his heir; a further 20 acres at Plumberge belong to John his son who
has full seisin thereof [Cal. IPMs Vol 1 Henry III p 23]

married Christiana. Issue:

2a. Lawrence de Plumbergh, born circa 1217; IPM: writ 8 February 37
Henry III: 'Laurence de Blumberg or Plumberg': John son of Thomas, his
brother, is his heir, aged 25; Essex: Sutton, Plumberg; the wife of
Thomas de Plumberg holds £10 of land in dower [Cal. IPMs Vol 1 Henry
III p 75]

2b. John de Plumbergh, born circa 1228

*********** Possibly father of:

x. Sir Lawrence de Plumbergh, commissioned, as Laurence de Plumber', re
Counties of Essex & Herts as to who should be made Knights, 12 March
1279 [Cal. Patent Rolls, Edward I p 342] granted land to his
son-in-law's family, the Coggeshalls, before 1296 (see following); dead
by 1296;

married Isabel: "1296: a messuage and 12 acres at Colchester, to Isobel
widow of Lawrence de Plumbergh, to hold for life" [Fine Rolls].

Issue:

xi. Sarah de Plumbergh, dead by May 1305; married John de Coggeshall
(c1277-1319) and left issue.
