Trevers and Engaine

Legg inn av BarBara » 16 sep 2005 00:08:02

Hi All,

In a recent article in Foundations, MichaelAnne Guido mentions Robert de
Trevers d 1135 held the barony of Burgh on Sands, Cumb. His daughter
Ibrea/Ebrea married, as his second wife, Orm, s/o Ketel. Her first husband
had been Ranulf Engaine d bef 1158

Does anyone know where Robert de Trevers sprang from? Anything abt. his
ancestry?

The same for Ranulf Engaine?

Any good online sources for either of them?

Thank you for any help.

Best, BarBara

Keats-Rohan (Domesday Descendants, p. 746) says that Robert was "Norman,
from Trévières, Calvados, given the barony of Burgh by Sands, Cumberland, by
Henry I (Sanders, [English Baronies,] 23). He married a sister of Ranulf of
Chester."

She then adds that his heir was his daughter Ibria, wife of Ranulf Engaine
of Idsell, Cumberland - Ibria and her son William Engaine both being dead by
1158, when their heir was William's daughter Ada, wife of Simon de Morville
(d. 1167).

I can't see any separate mention of Ranulf.

Dear Chris
Which Ranulf of Chester had the sister who married Robert de Trevers? Was
it the one whose wife was Maud of Gloucester? Or his father whose wife was
Lucia of Mercia?

The quote actually reads "He married a sister of Ranulf I of Chester."
The husband of Lucy is clearly meant.

By the way, that Lucy appears to have been daughter of Turold, Sheriff
of Lincoln by a daughter of William Malet, and hence "of Mercia" is
perhaps not the best surname to give her.
