Berry's Sussex Genealogy in the mss additions has this.
A sister of the first John de Shoyswell called Marie married Wm, Lord Etchingham-he built the church of Etchingham 'Ye arms of Shoyswell, impaled with his, are on his monument in ye quire and single in the upper window on ye North side of the Chancel.'
We know that John Shoyswell was living 48 Ed III 1375 so this would fit.
berry goes on
l
William =da of Arundell(Maltravers)
l
Sir Thomas son of William married da of ye Lord Crioll **
l
William son of Sir Thomas married da of William Batisford
l
Sir Thomas ob spm (son of Wm)

** added in another hand "daughter of Wm Shoyswell' What does this mean?

The other mss sibling of John Shoyswell is a Thomas 2nd son who marries an Agnes...Could Hall have mixed this up??? We do find other errors in Hall.

The mss additions give the ascent of this Marie Shoyswell who married an Etchingham as

"Wm=da of Ashburnham, son of Benjamin="The arms impaled are those of Wallis", son of John temp Edw 2,; son of John Temp Ed 1; son of John =Sybil da & heir of John de sounting son of Walter de Shoyswell"

This list doesn't fit with some facts. berry says that Wm and Alice Batisford has a Thomas? The list may not be correct.. I have only a typed copy sent to me and have not seen the printed copy of Berrys. Is he just giving facts on marriages or does he mean this to be a descent.

Charlotte,

See comments interspersed:

*The History, Antiquities and Topography of the County of Sussex*

by Thomas Walker Horsfield, F.S.A. published by Sussex Press, Lewes in
1835

page 588

The following are inscriptions from brasses within the church :–

/ On a Slab in the Chancel/ are three figures in brass ; that in the
centre represents a lady in full costume, with a dog at her feet ; on
each side is a knight in armour, with a lion at his feet. Above them
is a beautifully wrought canopy of three gothic arches, and below the
following inscription in old English characters – "Hic iacet Willms.
Octobr. Ao dni. M.^o CCCC.XLIJ. qr. aiabz. ppiciet. de Ame.

Near it is the headless figure of another warrior ; inscription – "De
terre fui fel et fourme et enterre su retouru William de Echingham,
estoie, nome dieu de maline eler pitee. Et vous qi par ici pur l'alme
de moy pur dieu priez : Qi de Janviere le XVIII. de cy passai lau me
seignour mill. trois cent quat VIII. R. Sept. come dieu volant ento my
noet."

/Arms/. ECHYNGHAM /impaling /SHOYSWELL.

This entry shows that William de Echyngham, husband of . . . Shoyswell,

died on 18 Jan 1348.

/On a Semicircular Brass Plate /– "Iste Wilms. fecit ista eccliam de
novo sectiti diare in honore dei et assupcios beate Marie et Sci
Pietri que qudm. fuit fili Jacobi de Echynghm. militis."

No arms on this stone.

This is the memorial to William, son of James de Echyngham. This William

was responsible for the building of the new church.

If Mr. Horsfield's account is accurate it would seem that the
Echyngham/Shoyswell marriage belongs to an earlier William.

All the best,

Tony Ingham
