Leo Van de Pas In answer to your questions regarding Page 281 Plantagenet Ancestry-Richardson.

1. Is it Agnes or Mary Shoyswell..? That is the question really. Where did Weis, Faris, and Richardson get the Agnes Shoyswell name. No primary sources it all seems to stem from the 1850 book by Spencer Hall. Weis in Ancestral Roots does not mention Shoyswell at all and used The Gen, op. cit as his source for the Knyvett marriage. Barry's Sussex genealogy calls her Marie Shoyswell and has her married to Wm Echyngham which fits with the memorials in the Etchingham church.

2. Was Thomas Echyngham ever married to a Shoyswell? I think not, but can I prove it? His grandfather William was married , I believe, first to a Shoyswell and then to an Elizabeth Croil. The memorials and windows in the Etchingham Church point to this.

2. I have the source "Echyngham(1850) pp 13-14" that Faris quoted. That is the book Echyngham of Echyngham by Hall. It gives the marriage of Agnes Shoyswell to Thomas Echyngham, but it says also in the same paragraph..."he left a son and two daughters(but of which wife not known) Elizabeth or Margaret who married John Winter and secondly Sir John Lunsford of Lunsford and Anne who married first John Touchet , Lord Audley and 2nd John .Rogers" Note the errors here in the sequence of Anne's marriages Also the marriage of a daughter to a John Winter has not been proved in this family. Spencer Hall never mentions the son Richard Echyngham which is evident in court suits involving Margaret Knyvett and the will of Thomas Echyngham. also mentions him. So another error for Hall. Why not a Shoyswell error.?

3. Tony Ingham pointed out, with sources, in the recent post the 3 marriages of Margaret Knyvet, According to Tony, Margaret probably couldn't have married Thomas until after about 1422 as her second husband Thomas Marney did not die until then. Margaret only mentions her son Richard in most of her legal suits.

4. The reference to Faris page 96"age 20 or more in 1445 " is for the son of Thomas Echyngham b 1401.

The question remains. Did Thomas Echyngham b 1401 marry Agnes Shoyswell as a first wife. ?
