Flintoff Rules
I hope Simon, Adrian and other English newsgroup members are thoroughly
enjoying the Ashes victory - it's truly well-deserved, and somewhat
gratifying even to a lot of Australians. We are not about to make a
national hero of Warne again, and from this point of view it was a
relief that he couldn't spin the match & the series our way.
So more power to Flintoff! (However, a bit less luck to Pietersen
wouldn't go astray another time - he was given virtually four innings
at the Oval, but again Warne's part in this made it not too
disappointing).

A truly great knock by Pietersen. A nice touch, I thought, that when
Pietersen finally got out, Warne went out of his way to congratulate him,
even though he had just denied Australia the Ashes. A great series!

Yes, Warne has played a lot of cricket with Pietersen, and predicted before
the series that he would "hurt" Australia if selected.
Mind you if Warne and Hayden had held onto catches, things might have looked
different. But no other result would have done justice to the play & efforts
of the two sides throughout all five matches. The stoicism of Geraint Jones
under pressure shouldn't go unremarked, along with the deeds of his more
successful & glamorous teammates.
And next time the Ashes will change hands again.

Slightly gritted? My teeth are actually gnashed to the gums!
I enjoyed the crowd antics at the Oval - even the patriotic sing-alongs -
apart from the usual streaker, who only did himself out of the celebration
anyway. Also the Australian players donning sunglasses, though I have to
admit the umpires did a very good job, in the gloom & overall.
Enjoy it, & put it out of your mind that this can't last for sixteen
years....as I put it out of my thoughts that there will be no Warne or
McGrath in the game before long, while Flintoff is unstoppable.

Said through very slightly gritted teeth! Thanks all the same, its been
a
long time coming. Did you see that bit where the Poms put up their
brollies,
pretending it was raining, and the Aussies immediately stripped off to
sun
bath, very quick thinking.

Half your luck....no, that's exactly what I have already. Like "Uriah" I was
born a British subject, only for real in my case, but it's next-to
impossible to split an Australian's partisanship over cricket no matter what
the passport/s. I hope you don't feel too divided during the triumphal
procession in London - they aren't going along the Strand past Australia
House. I wonder why.

Re: Flintoff Rules
I passed up an invitation to join the rest of the office in Trafalgar
Square - although I like to think I can't lose when England play
Australia, it is telling that - when it comes to the crunch - one finds
one's loyalties (at least in so far as the cricket) are deeply
Antipodean...
Nice that the locals are complaining about the weather for once though!

Shouldn't y'all label this OT? You'd have a fit if it was being done
by someone you disapprove of.

Re: Flintoff Rules
Many thanks for your kind words - it was a contest both teams (and
countries) can be proud of. Seeing how keenly the games were contested it
was gratifying to see the level of sportsmanship shown - it put many other
sports to shame.
Personally I feel the difference was not Flintoff, Pietersen etc
but the two captains, Ponting was indecisive, unadventurous and not a leader
Just like Brearley some years ago, Vaughan brought out the best
Isn't it now time for your Footie final?
