Noyes-Libby-Davis, _Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire_
has entries for two Hoddys, Arthur and John ("presumably" brothers),
who were both called "Mr.," and were mariners based at Portsmouth, New
Hampshire. The _Dictionary_ notes as a clue that "[i]n 1630 John Hody,
Esq., and Arthur, gent., bros., owned land in par. of Hawkchurch, co.
Dorset."

John Hutchins, _The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset_,
2:233, is an interesting pedigree of "Hody of Pillesdon." Two distinct
sets of brothers named Arthur and John are found near the bottom of
this chart.

Did the Hoddys have descendants in New England? The _Dictionary_ seems
to indicate that John Hoddy's daughter Mary, wife of Capt. Paul
Gerrish, was the only one of his children still alive in 1718, while
Arthur had a wife, but no children (?).

Oddly, the Mary Hoddy who married Gerrish would be a descendant of the
Thadeus Riddan discussed earlier this year (her mother Mary being a
dau. of Thadeus).

The only way you could find out is by contacting whereever the Parich
Registers and Parish Chest are kept, I would imagine the Dorsetshire
archvies.

you could try lookin here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~engdorse/PRBT.html

otherwise you will need to get an archivist to check it out for you.

The registers for Hawkchurch begin in 1663,
so there is nothing to check in that direction.

There could be others sources worth consulting. Try locating manorial
records, tax lists, wills. I find will are very usefull when making the
jump from the US to the UK.

Maybe there would be something earlier for Pilsdon?

My ancestor John Hoddy lived in Ohio in the early 19th century - family
tradition says he came from western Virginia; and a Hoddy web site
(can't remember the URL but Google should find it) has a Robert Hoddy
in Harpers Ferry circa 1790. I know virtually nothing about this family
and am a bit surprised to find it in New England.
