The phrase is "Hoist with his own petard"

Speaking of this. A friend and I were trying to figure out exactly what this
means and so we consulted a desk dictionary that he has. Am I right to think
petard means ..... fart ? That is you are blasted up into the air by farting
? Tell me I'm off base here.

Way off. In both senses of the work "off".

A petard is a small bomb. Think hand grenade.

Yep, a petard it a bomb. But it does come from the French word for
fart.

Smaller than that. Today, a "petard" is a small firework, the
kind that explodes (whence the name) and not the rocket that
explodes in the sky.

The word is derived from "pet" (fart) because of the sound.

"Petard" can also mean "horse's arse". Consequently, in the Uriah business,
Richardson has been hoist with Richardson.
