C.P. Addition: Mildenhall, Wiltshire held by Earls of Salisb

Dear Newsgroup ~

I've been enjoying reading through the book, Surveys of the Estates of
the Glastonbury Abbey, c. 1135-1201, edited by N.E. Stacy (Records of
Social and Economic Hist. n.s. 33) (2001).

Pages 242- 247 of this book contain a survey of the tenants of the
Glastonbury Abbey taken circa 1198, which survey is entitled "Extracts
from the Book of Thomas atte Nye." This survey (pg. 244) shows that
Earl Patrick of Salisbury held the manor of Mildenhall, Wiltshire of
Glastonbury Abbey. On footnote 8 on pg. 244, the editor adds the
following information:

"Mildenhall (Wilts.) had been held of the abbey in 1086 by Edward of
Salisbury, in 1135 by his son, Walter of Salisbury (called 'of
Sherborne' in Glastonbury's carta), and in 1166 by his grandson,
Patrick, earl of Salisbury: Domesday Book (Record Commission, 1783) i.
66bi; Red Book of the Exchequer, i. 222. Thomas's list was out of date
here, since Patrick had died in 1168 and by 1198 had been replaced by
his granddaughter's husband, William Longespee: GEC, xi. 379. Service
from Mildenhall lapsed after its gift as dowry to Patrick's sister,
Sybil, on her marriage to John Marshal in the 1140's, and was not
resumed until 1173x80: Stacy, 'Henry of Blois', Eng. Hist. Review, cxiv
(1999), pp. 32-33; The Great Chartulary of Glastonbury (SRS, lix), i,
no. 324 (wrongly dated); cf. GEC, x, App. G, p. 95." END OF QUOTE.

I haven't studied the exact train of ownership of Mildenhall, Wiltshire
after 1198. However, my file notes indicate it subsequently served as
the maritagium of Isabel de Ferrers (died 1260), wife of Sir Reynold de
Mohun, of Dunster, Somerset. Isabel de Ferrers's great-grandmother was
Sibyl of Salisbury, wife of John Marshal (died 1165). Complete
Peerage, x, Appendix G, p. 95 mentions the marriage of John Marshal and
his 2nd wife, Sibyl of Salisbury, but not the manor of Mildenhall,
Wiltshire.

You're quite welcome.

Upon second thought, it seems more probable that the manor of
Mildenhall, Wiltshire formed part of Isabel de Ferrers' share of the
Marshall inheritance, rather than being her maritagium as I stated.
