Curwen -- c-o-a

Thank you, Tim,

History:

I did NOT know once a crescent, always a crescent, so I've learned
something new.

From Tim 2/9:
I'm not sure what you are referring to since you have not quoted it, but
suspect it is about some perceived need to add differences to arms and
then to maintain them for ever more.

I was referring to Michael's post of 1/9:
The arms with the crescent for difference technically belong to EVERY
second son in each generation i.e. the 2nd son of every head of the
Curwen family will bear the Curwen arms with a crescent for difference.
And so will the eldest son of every 2nd son, ad infinitum. This can
beome confusing, which is partly why the display of quarterings are
important and partly why these marks of cadency aren't always bothered
with.

From Tim 2/9:
In England there is no such need. I have various documents from the
College of Arms which explicitly allow the same undifferenced arms by
people who are distant cousins. Further the heraldic textbooks on
English practice also explicitly deny a formal need to add difference
marks.

Nor did I know this. All of which is going to make my search for the
Northants Curwen family even more difficult than I expected it to be. I had
hoped the crescent addition to the arms would help point to the right family
of origin -- but I guess not.

Back to work. <sigh>

Thank you again.

Best, BarBara
