Dear All,
Can anyone please help by giving me some information on the present Earl of
Derby and, if possible, an address to write to.
I'm stuck on the origins of my Fell/s ancestors, yet they seemed to be men
of some substance, and one, Miles Fells, was steward to the Earl of Derby in
the 1500's, so I want to try and find out if there are any records still
held by their family, which might shed some light on mine.
I've tried the a2a site several times, but with a name like Fell/s, the
returns are mainly to do with land.
Miles Fells' son, William Fells, married, as her fourth husband, Margaret
(nee Hockenhull) before 1596. Her sister was Katherine Hockenhull who
married Edward More, of Bank Hall, co. Lanc., esq. (I've found quite a lot
of detail on Edward More (Moore)). Margaret and Katherine were two
daughters of John Hockenell of Prenton and Margaret Hockenhull (cousins). I
believe this John Hockenell died in 1590 whilst in Chester Castle, for
recusancy.
I would appreciate any help.

The main collection of records of the Stanley earls of Derby has been
deposited at the Lancashire Record Office. You can browse the catalogues of
these online on the A2A site:

It may be that you can find some reference to your Fells family by searching
within these catalogue.

RE: Present Earl of Derby
Dear Chris,
Many thanks indeed for sending the link to the catalogues of records of the
Stanley earls of Derby. I've already seen something which may help my
research, Ministers' Accounts of the Earldom, the "Accounts of the Bailiffs,
Receivers and Stewards from the time of Henry VIII to 1728".
Thank you for taking the time to reply. That's a great help.
Many regards,
Yvonne Purdy
