Wisemans in ancestry of Thomas Bayes of Dedham and Boston?

I am a descendant of the immigrant Thomas Bayes of Dedham, Mass.,
through his granddaughter Mercy Norton, a loose woman of sorts, who had
an illegitimate child (before her marriage to Claghorn) by the Rev.
Samuel Osborn of Eastham and Pochet; I'm descended from this child,
Samuel Osborn, Jr.

http://history.vineyard.net/nortoni.htm#isaac10

As Savage's _Dictionary_ only gives a brief snippet on Bayes, I'd never
paid much attention to him:

[BAY/ BAYES], THOMAS, Dedham, by w. Ann had Ruth, b. 2, bapt. 16 July
1643; and Thomas, 1, bapt. 22 Mar. 1646; rem. to Boston.

But Pope's maligned _Pioneers of Massachusetts_, p. 39, gives a
tantalizing clue to his origin:

BAYES, Thomas, carpenter, Dedham. Propr[ietor]. 1638. He m. 26 (10)
1639, Ann Baker, a maid servant, who was adm[itted to the] ch[urc]h. 16
(4) 1639; ch. Ruth bapt. 16 (5) 1643, Thomas bapt. 22 (1) 1646. He
gave power of attorney for collection of legacy from his grandfather
___ Wiseman of Barrow Upton, co. Norfolk, 12 (10) 1646. A[spinwall].

There are two Wiseman wills from Wimbotsham, Norfolk, in the P.C.C.,
but both of these date from somewhat later (1650s). Perhaps the will
giving the legacy to Bayes is found in the Consistory Court of Norwich.
Does anybody know anything further about this Wiseman-Bayes connection?

"Barrow Upton" is probably the same as Bergh Apton, co. Norfolk.

There are also two Archdeaconry Courts in Norfolk. Im not sure if the
wills are completely indexed.

I have known about the Bayes clue for a long time, but I didnt realize
that they had descendants.

I have known about the Bayes clue for a long time, but I didnt realize that they had descendants.

I thought that might be the case, since it didn't look too promising in
Savage.

Apparently Isaac Norton's brother married Ruth Bayes' sister--at any
rate, there were several men in eighteenth-century Martha's Vineyard
named "Bayes Norton."

I believe Bethuel Merritt Newcomb, "Andrew Newcomb and His
Descendants," (New Haven, CT: The Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor County,
1923), 20-30, states that Andrew Newcomb Jr (c. 1644-1706) married Anna
Bayes (c. 1657-1731), daughter of Thomas Bayes and Anna Baker; and that
Andrew Newcomb Jr and Anna Bayes had seven daughters and one son--who
left descendants. I say, "I believe," because I don't have access to
the source at present.

I tried to locate Norwich will indices at the Society of Genealogists
this evening, but no luck. They have the Sudbury archdeaconry series,
but there was nothing in there.

Anyone can access the SoG catalogue online at:

http://www.sog.org.uk/sogcat/access/

You should read the instructions about changing the "Look for" field to
SU (Subject).

Many of the Norwich wills are listed on the online catalogue of Norfolk
Record Office, here:
http://nrocat.norfolk.gov.uk/dservea/Index.htm

The jurisdictions currently covered are:
* Norwich Consistory Court wills 1370-1858 and administrations
1371-1857 (catalogue reference 'NCC')
* Peculiar of Great Cressingham wills 1675-1754 ('PGC 4' and 'PGC 5')
and administrations 1702-1710 ('PGC 7')
* Peculiar of Castle Rising indexes of wills 1624-1724 and
administrations 1703-1720 ('PRCR')
* Court of the City of Norwich enrolled wills, 1286-1508 ('NCR')
* King's Lynn Borough enrolled wills 1276-1539 ('KL/C 12')

(Thanks to Matthew Hovius for pointing out this excellent resource.)

Brilliant - thanks Tim - this will be a very useful planning tool.
