King's Kinsfolk: Wartislas, Duke of Stettin, kinsman of King

Dear Newsgroup ~

The book, The Diplomatic Correspondence of Richard II, edited by
Eduoard Perroy (Camden Soc. 3rd ser. 48) (1933), contains a letter
dated 1387 from King Richard II of England addressed to his kinsman
["consanguineo"], Wartislas [VII], Duke of Stettin, Pommern, etc.:

pg. 53: "Richardus etc., nobili et potenti viri Wartislao, Dei gracia
duci Stetinensi, Pomeranie, Cassubie, Sclanie Ruyanorumque principi,
consanguineo nostro carissimo ..."

Research indicates that King Richard II and Wartislas [VII], Duke of
Stettin (died 1395), were related in the 5th and 6th degrees of kindred
by way of common descent from King John of England (died 1216) as
follows:

l. John, King of England, died 1216.
2. Henry III, King of England, married Eleanor of Provence.
3. Edward I, King of England, married Margaret of France.
4. Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent, married Margaret Wake.
5. Joan of Kent, married Edward the Black Prince, Prince of Wales.
6. Richard II, King of England.

1. John, King of England, died 1216.
2. Isabel of England, married Friedrich II, Holy Roman Emperor.
3. Margarethe of Hohenstaufen, married Albrecht II, Margrave of
Meissen.
4. Agnes of Meissen, married Heinrich I, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen.
5. Ernst, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen.
6. Adelheid of Brunswick, married Bogislaw V, Duke of Pommern-Wolgast.
7. Wartislas VII, Duke of Stettin.

On page 70, I note there is also a letter dated 1389 from King Richard
II to his kinsman ["consanguineo"], the Duke of Wolgast-Pommern. The
modern editor does not identity this individual. But, gauging from the
title, I presume this person is a member of the same immediate family
as Wartislas VII, Duke of Stettin above. If someone knows this
individual's identity, I'd appreciate it if they would post that
information here on the newsgroup. Thanks!

According to:

http://genealogy.euweb.cz/pomer/pomer2.html

which I understand is based on ES, the Duke of Wolgast-Pomerania in
1389 was Bogislaw VI, son of Duke Barnim IV and Sophie von Werle zu
Guestrow; Barnim IV was the brother of Bogislaw V whom you list as the
husband of Adelaide of Brunswick. He would therefore be "8" to your
Richard II at "6".

Dear Michael ~

Thank you for your prompt reply. Much appreciated.

Presuming you have correctly identified the Duke of Wolgast-Pomerania
in 1389 as Duke Bogislaw VI, then King Richard II would be related to
him in the 5th and 6th degrees of kindred by way of common descent from
King John of England (died 1216) as follows:

5. Mechtild of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, married Johann II, Furst von
Werle.
6. Sophie von Werle, married Barnim IV, Duke of Pommern.
7. Bogislaw VI, Duke of Pomerania-Wolgast.

I should point out that the above kinship to King Richard II is
slightly different than the one I set out for Bogislaw VI's cousin,
Wartislas, Duke of Stettin, even though it is going back to the same
earlier connections.

By the way, thanks for mentioning the genealogical database at

be very helpful.
