Dear Newsgroup ~

Some time ago, the learned John Ravilious posted the following pedigree
of the de la Haye family of Spaldington, Yorkshire, which reads in part
as follows:

Thomas de la Haye = 1) Elizabeth
of Spaldington Babthorpe
d. bef 6 Oct 1433 = 2) Janet <mother of Alice>
_____________I_______________________
I I I
Katherine Alice Isabel
= Robert Hildyard = Thomas Thwaites
of Winestead of Thwaites and Denton
I I
V V

Recently I encountered a deed dated 1481 published by Sir Henry
Vavasour which concerns the estate of Thomas de la Haye, Esquire, of
Spaldington. It shows that Thomas de la Haye, Esquire, had four
daughters in all, three of whom are named in the deed: Katherine
Hildyard (mother of Robert Hilyard, Knt.), Elizabeth Knight, widow, and
Alice Thwaites, widow. The published abstract of the deed reads as
follows:

"Deed whereby Robert Hilyerd knight, son and heir of Katerine one of
the daughters and heirs of Thomas de la Haye, esquire, Elezabeth
Knyght, widow, the third of the daughters and heirs of Thomas, and
Alice Thwaytes widow, fourth daughter and heir of Thomas, release and
quit-claim to John Vavasour junior, serjeant-at-law, and his heirs, all
their right in the manor of Spaldyngton and Willytofte, and 20 acres of
land in Holme. Habendum to releases in fee, with warranty. Last day
of August, 21 Edward IV. (1481)." [The Proceedings of the Society of
Antiquaries 2nd ser. 4 (1869): 79].

On the same pg. 79, Sir Henry Vavasour further states: "John Vavasour,
senior, married Isabel one of the daughters and coheirs of Thomas de la
Haye, lord of Spaldington, who brought that lordship into her husband's
family. John, their son, was afterwards a Jistice of the Common Bench.
See a pedigree of this family in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica,
edited by J.J. Howard, Esq., i. 193." END OF QUOTE.

So, it would appear that Thomas de la Haye, Esq., had four daughters
and co-heiresses, namely Isabel (wife of John Vavasour), Katherine
(wife of Robert Hilyard), Alice (wife of Thomas Thwaites, and Elizabeth
(wife of _____ Knight). This adds an extra daughter to John Ravilious'
good pedigree.

For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New
World colonists who descend from Thomas de la Haye, Esquire:

William Asfordby, Henry, Thomas & William Batte, William Farrar, Roger
& Thomas Mallory, Philip & Thomas Nelson, William Skepper.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Doug,

Thanks for that extremely interesting find. In addition to adding another daughter to the mix of Thomas de la Haye's coheirs, this find also offers the possibility of resolving the matter of the maternity of those daughters.

We know Thomas de la Hay had two wives: 1) Elizabeth Babthorpe, and 2) Janet. We know also that Alice (de la Haye) Thwaites was the daughter of Janet [1], but there was uncertainty as to the other daughters and their mother. Further, the order of birth of the daughters was uncertain as well. Now knowing from the text you provided that there was a 3rd daughter, Elizabeth, I would suggest that the first three - Isabel, Katherine and Elizabeth) were the daughters of Elizabeth Babthorpe - esp. with the (admittedly weak) onomastic evidence of the name Elizabeth; and, that Alice was the one daughter (attested) of Janet.

This also has the benefit of agreeing with the one pedigree I recall from Poulson, which showed Elizabeth Babthorpe as the mother of Katherine (de la Hay) Hildyard.

A further note: the Thwaites line of descent from Thomas de la Hay traces down to the emigrant Jane Lowe, and her siblings (through the Thwaites and Harpur families).

Cheers,

John
