Back from the dead - 1388 style

I have seen references to Thomas Bekering of Nottinghamshire having
"died in 1388". This is presumably based on his published Inquisition
Post Mortem - but it is only half of the story.

(1) Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem, Vol XVI 7-15 Richard II

#516 15 November 11 Richard II [actually 1387]: Thomas Bekering

Joan, sometime wife of John de Bekering, knight, holds Langworth manor
and Laxton, Nottinghamshire, and Catworth, Huntingdonshire, by dower -
reversion to Thomas de Bekering and his heirs. He died in parts beyond
the seas Thursday after St Barnabas, 9 Richard II. Heir: his son
Thomas, aged four years and more.

(2) Calendar of Patent Rolls

13 March 1388 At Westminster

Revocation of letters patent granting to Edward, son of the King's
uncle Edmund, Duke of York, the custody of the lands and tenements late
of Thomas Bekering, tenant in chief, who by divers inquisitions
returned into Chancery was reported to be dead; because he is alive and
has appeared this day before the King in Chancery.

We often hear that Visitation records are untrustworthy; perhaps IPMs
also need to be treated with a pinch of salt...
