Richard Grey, K.G. (died 1418), 4th Lord Grey of Codnor, was styled
"king's kinsman" on numerous occasions by King Henry IV of England
[References: Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1401-1405 (1905): 122, 285,
483; Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1405-1408 (1907): 20, 84, 145; Legge,
Anglo-Norman Letters & Petitions (Anglo-Norman Text Soc. 3) (1941):
432-433].

The two men were related in the 5th and 8th degrees of kindred by way
of common descent from John de Brienne (died 1237), King-Regent of
Jerusalem, Emperor-Regent of Constantinople, as follows:

1. John de Brienne, died 1237.
2. Louis de Brienne, Knt., Vicomte of Beaumont, married Agnes de
Beaumont.
3. Henry de Beaumont, Knt., 1st Lord Beaumont, Earl of Buchan and
Moray, married Alice Comyn.
4. Isabel de Beaumont, married Henry of Lancaster, K.G., Duke of
Lancaster.
5. Blanche of Lancaster, married John of Gaunt, K.G., Duke of Aquitaine
and Lancaster.
6. Henry IV, King of England.

1. John de Brienne, died 1237.
2. John de Brienne, seigneur of Chateau-du-Loire, Butler of France,
married Jeanne de Chateaudun.
3. Blanche de Brienne, married William de Fiennes, Knt., seigneur of
Fiennes.
4. Margaret de Fiennes, married Edmund de Mortimer, Knt., 1st Lord

The titles given are incorrect: Jean was count of Brienne from June 1205 as
regent for his nephew born posthumously, then king (regnant, not regent) of
Jerusalem by right of his first wife from 3 October 1210 until her death
after 15 April 1212 when he became regent for their daughter Iolanda
(Isabelle). This regency ended with her marriage on 9 November 1225, and
Jean was elected emperor of the Latins in Constantinople (in his own right)
in 1229.

Lucky for him he wasn't a Vernon, as then his entire life could be
re-invented to suit Richardson.
