Dear Newsgroup ~

I've been reading through the interesting book, Select Documents of the
English Lands of the Abbey of Bec, ed. by Marjorie Chibnall (Camden 3rd
ser. 73) (1951). The book contains many earlier charters for the
period before 1225.

Included among the various charters are three dated 1199/1200, 1199,
and 1199 (pp. 5, 13, 21), all of them witnessed by a certain Godfrey,
Archdeacon of Cambrai. In two of the charters, Godfrey is specifically
called brother of the Count of Flanders ["fratris comitis
Flandrensis]." His given name in Latin is spelled "Godefridi" in all
three charters.

Can anyone identify this individual and his place in the comital family
of Flanders?

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Newsgroup ~

I find that Godfrey, Archdeacon of Cambrai, is identified as an
illegitimate brother of Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, Emperor of
Constantinople (died 1205), on the following two websites:

http://genealogy.euweb.cz/flanders/flanders2.html

http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/conti ... nders2.htm

Is there other evidence of Godfrey's existence besides the charters I
have cited?
