Earl of Howth, Dublin Ireland

I am requiring some expertise please in the area of St. Lawrence, Baron Howth (Sir Armoricus Tristram) and his descendants from Normandy.

I realise the period I am trying to research is perhaps on the border line of the Lists interests, but it certainly goes back to the 12th century.

ADAM TRISTRAM, School Teacher and described as Clerk in Holy Orders and brother THOMAS TRISTRAM of Ireland were born early 1800's (don't know where). It is known their father was also called THOMAS TRISTRAM.

It is family lore from two completely different sources that Adam Tristram's children were stated to be cousins of the EARL OF HOWTH of Dublin. It is thought Adam had three wives, all in Ireland. ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, MARGRET and MARY ANN BUDDS.

I do not have access to Burke's Peerage or any such literature and have seen on the web only a portion of the St. Lawrence, Baron Howth lines.

Has anyone any suggestions as to how I prove this story. I am situated in Australia and not near any major Libraries.

With thanks,

Robyn Clarke

The Howth titles are extinct; the family name was St Lawrence;
Tristam was a name used only once in the family, by the penultimate
peer, and then as a Christian name. There is no obvious reason for the
adoption of this Christian name. Who is Sir Armoricus Tristram?

A quick glimpse in the CP Volume VI tells that the Earl Howth (St.Lawrence
family) became extinct in 1909, the Earl Howth title was regarded to be
extinct but _save possibly the ancient Barony_ in other words, they
regarded it possible that some line had survived.

The last Earl had a half-brother Thomas Kenelm Digby St.Lawrence was born in
1855 and died unmarried in 1891.

Page 610 shows William Ulick Tristram St.Lawrence, Earl of Howth, Viscount
St.Lawrence, Baron Howth. Note the Tristram part!!

The record in CP for this family (page 604 to 611) goes back to about 1400.

I am fortunate to have Burke's Peerage 1899 when the title was still in
existence and this shows the family to go back to about 1177 Sir Amoricus or
Amory Tristram and his brother-in-law Sir John de Courcy.

Hope this helps a little?

Sis Armoricus Tristram lived about 1177 and may be an ancestor of the
St.Lawrence family. I spotted this in Burke's Peerage 1899. I have only
about 15 minutes before I have to rush out, but I will come back to this as
I am quite intrigued to see what I can find in that old edition.
Best wishes.
