Some new Todd and Jones ancestors for Camilla of Wales
The WARGS website gives the following for Camilla's ancestor the artist
Joshua W. Faulkner:
http://www.wargs.com/royal/camilla.html
34 Joshua Wilson Faulkner, miniature painter, of The Philippines,
Brasted, Kent, bapt. St. Ann, Manchester, 28 Feb. 1783 [IGI], d.
Sevenoaks [Oct-Dec] 1874 [ODNB 19:147] m. St. Marylebone 1819
35 Elizabeth Susanna Jones, d. Croydon, Surrey, [April-June] 1858
68 William Faulkner, b. before 22 Feb. 1739/40 m. Manchester Cathedral
10 Feb. 1771
69 Elizabeth Torr
In other words, little is known of the Faulkners, and nothing of the
Joneses.
Edward Walford, _The County Families of the United Kingdom; or, Royal
Manual of the Titled and Untitled Aristocracy of Great Britain and
Ireland_ (London, 1871), a sort of Who's Who of wealthy British of the
1870s, has an entry for Joshua W. Faulkner:
p. 356: FAULKNER, JOSHUA WILSON, Esq., of The Philippines, Kent.
Eldest surviving son of the late William Faulkner, Esq., by Elizabeth,
dau. of Thomas Todd, Esq., of Bradford, co. York; b. 1783; m. 1819
Elizabeth Susanna, dau. of the late Robert Burnett Jones, Esq., and
had, with other issue, Henry Dornberg, Lieut.-Col. 42nd Regt. Madras
Native Infantry ...
So possibly WARG's #69 is Elizabeth TODD, rather than Torr, and the
family was either originally or subsequently situated at Bradford in
Yorkshire.
In connection with Robert Burnett Jones, Esq., I've noted the following

Re: Some new Todd and Jones ancestors for Camilla of Wales
I've noticed there are three patron-submitted entries in the IGI for
the marriage in 1766 (or 1777) of Robert Burnett Jones of Ades, Sussex,
to an Elizabeth Susannah Estwicke. In one instance, they are shown
with a daughter Mary Jones, wife of James Everard Arundell.

If the Estwicke-Jones connection is correct, it may give Princess
Camilla some new ancestors named Frere, Pearson, Turnor, Spiar,
Applewhaite, Pead, Kingsland, and Coleman. See

See James C. Brandow, comp., _Genealogies of Barbados Families : From
Caribbeana and The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical
Society_ (G.P.C, 1983), p. 229, a pedigree chart which shows
"Eliz. Susannah Estwick, mar. Rob. Burnett Jones of Ades, co. Sussex,
Attorney-Gen. of Barbados. He died 5 Aug. 1817. (See Burke's 'Landed
Gentry.')"
Eliz. Susannah was one of two children (by the first wife) of "Samuel
Estwick, Esq., born 1736: of Queen's Coll., Oxford, matric. 10 Oct.
1753, aged 17; created M.A. 4 Nov. 1763, D.C.L. 8 July 1773; M.P.
Westbury Mch. 1779. In 1783 Registrar of Chelsea Hospital and Searcher
of Customs at Antigua; Agent for Barbados; died Nov. 1796. (682,
Newcastle.)"
His first wife, mother of Eliz. Susannah, was "Eliz., 1st dau. of Hon.
John Frere, President of Barbados, by Susanna Applewhaite; born 1738;
died 1766, aged 28. Will dated 8 May and proved 9 Dec. 1766 (449,
Tyndall)."
Again, if this is the correct line behind Mrs. Faulkner, other
surname's in Camilla's ancestry (per this pedigree) are Estwick
(obviously), Rous, Maxwell, Bond, and Brooke).

Barbados
I have a "proven" ancestor, John Eaton of Dedham, of who can be identified
in Dover, Kent, and in Massachusetts (1636). However, his name is not on the
ship's (Elizabeth and Ann) manifest with that of his wife and children.
Neither can he be found on similar ships' lists explored to date. I am
guessing that he preceded his family by a year (1634/35).
Does anyone have an ideas about how I might find him. I don't know if I have
exhausted all ships' list resources, but it seems that way. A person by the
same name did leave London for the Azores, but the timing is late by a
couple of years.

More of the possible ancestry may be shown in the chart in Cussans'

1. John Frere, of Thurston, Co. Suffolk
2. Alexander [Frere], of Swyfling = Joan, da. ___ Glenham
3. John [Frere] = Joan, da. ___ Brampton
4. Alexander [Frere], of Swyfling

John Eaton arrival (was: Barbados)
Hi Rick,
Popes' Pioneers of Mass. shows (p. 150) a John Eaton who was a
proprieter in Watertown and a freeman May 25, 1636. Rem. to Dedham;
wife Abigail.
Mr. Anderson's rule of thumb for the Great Migration books (as I understand it)
is that those who became freemen in the spring of a year probably
arrived the preceding summer or fall. Therefore, we might expect
this John Eaton to be the latest (second series) of Great Migration books,
which cover arrivals from 1634 - 1635. I see in the index to Vol II,
covering C-F, a John Eaton. This may be your man. If so, the
"sketch" should show the latest research on him and his arrival.
Complete title: The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England,
1634-1635, volume II, C-F by Robert Charles Anderson.

Re: John Eaton arrival (was: Barbados)
What a magnificent reply and lead. Thank you so very much.
As I am unable to get out to major libraries these days (and cannot risk
lung infections that come from old books and repositories), I will probably
pass this on to other interested Eaton Association members who have been
struggling with John's timing and tg ransit to US shores.
Again, I am elated by your finding and assistance.
I would point out that published "genealogies" of the 19th century were too
quick to dismiss John's absence from the Elizabeth & Ann Manifest as an
"oversight," "a common occurrence because, often, names were added later,"
etc.
I have never believed that and, because of this, I (and others) have been
working for years on this problem.
As the first of his line and a progenitor of the five original Eaton
families in New England, John of Dedham, as he has come to be known, is not
more than a first generation American until we can prove what seems
obvious-- that he is the same person who was a young man in Dover, Kent as a
Dedham, MA freeman after a short, stay in the more settled Watertown.
Your intelligence will help our exploration a great deal and I thank you
very much.
This reminds me of just how important historical scholarship is to this
complex field, as well as how much good people can help others.

Re: John Eaton arrival (was: Barbados)
Howard,
I may have gotten confused aboutg who was posting or e-mailing on this
subject. If that is the case, I want to thank you very much for this
extremely valuable historical information. I have passed it on to Eaton
Association members for their use. We know John in great detail, of course,
but we did not know about the Anderson rule of thumb. That will be useful
for any researcher to know.

Hi Rick,

I have a "proven" ancestor, John Eaton of Dedham, of who can be identified
in Dover, Kent, and in Massachusetts (1636). However, his name is not on the
ship's (Elizabeth and Ann) manifest with that of his wife and children.
Neither can he be found on similar ships' lists explored to date. I am
guessing that he preceded his family by a year (1634/35).
Popes' Pioneers of Mass. shows (p. 150) a John Eaton who was a
proprieter in Watertown and a freeman May 25, 1636. Rem. to Dedham;
wife Abigail.
Mr. Anderson's rule of thumb for the Great Migration books (as I understand
it)
is that those who became freemen in the spring of a year probably
arrived the preceding summer or fall.

Re: Some new Todd and Jones ancestors for Camilla of Wales
Wargs has incorporated this info. into his AT for Princess Camilla at
http://www.wargs.com/royal/camilla.html (see esp. nos. 35, 70, and 71).
Wargs shows that Camilla has two lines of descent from a certain Peter
Turner (nos. 4580 and 4588) via the Eastwickes. If we consult his
source _Genealogies of Barbados Families_ (George A. Moriarty's article
on the Turner family of New England and Barbados) and Alicia Crane
Williams, ed., _Chase-Wigglesworth Genealogy : The Ancestors and
Descendants of Philip Putnam Chase and his wife Anna Cornelia
Wigglesworth_, we can trace some relationships of Camilla to prominent
New England families such as Browne, Sargent, Bowditch, Ingersoll, etc.
(including the wife of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.).
