William Urry's book "Thomas Becket - Last Days"
describes well Henry II's predicament - very few
approved of Thomas Becket's death. Finally Henry
realised that he would have to make amends with a
major gesture of repentance.

He set sail from Normandy 7th July 1174, and entered
the walls of Canterbury 12th July. There he removed
his fine clothes. With his back bare, he thrust his
head and shoulders into the stinking crypt of a
putrified Thomas Becket. And there he received about
three hundred lashes from the clergy - 5 lashes each
from the bishops and 3 lashes each from the eighty odd
monks.

Finally he was permitted to withdraw his head, totter
to a nearby pillar, and squat in the dust. And there
he remained throughout the whole night.

The church certainly took advantage of the occasion,
and acquired considerable power thereafter for 350
years until another Henry destroyed its authority. The
church also made certain that Henry's advisers
(enemies of the church) including Sir Richard Lucy
were punished.

So I imagine that Delisle was correct. Sir Richard
Lucy was in disgrace 1176, and retired to Lessnes
Abbey 1179.

No mention was made of Roesia. As I have seen claims
but no sources that she was born in Little Dunmow
Essex, I cannot help wondering why the sister of
Faramus should end up there patiently waiting for Sir
Richard to propose.

Of course when a man (admittedly a king) can take 300
lashes without a whimper, perhaps one can expect
extraordinary things of this Roesia who is claimed to
be of the same family. Anyhow I note that some
subscribers possess the evidence that Roesia is part
of the royal family - would some kind person explain.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
