Suffolk Inquisition: 20 October 6 Edward II:
Manor of Thodeham [Tuddenham] held by John and Eleanor his wife.
Richard Freville aged 14 is next heir.
Hertfordshire Inquisition: Munden Freville, Tuesday before St Luke 6 Ed
II:
The manor with advowson was given by David de Freville to the said John
and Eleanor and the heirs of the said John, by fine levied in the
King's Court, and is held of the manor of Wodhull by service of one
knight's fee and 9s yearly.
Cambridgeshire Inquisition: 17 November 6 Ed II:
Caxton - held in chief; Wratting - held with Eleanor his wife by the
gift of Richard de Freville, father of the said John; Mabel, mother of
the said John, holds part of the manor of Shelford in dower; Boxworth:
five knights' fees; property at Bassingbourn, Shepreth, Carlton,
Swaffham etc; assignment of dower to Eleanor late the wife of John de
Frivile.

23 July 12 Edward II (C Ed II File 63 (14)
"Hugh le Ro... aged 60 says Richard Freville was born at Girton,
Cambridegshire and baptised at the same church on the Saturday after
Ash Wednesday, 26 Edward I, and was aged 21 on that day 12 Edward II
which he knows because in the same year he built a chamber to the value
of 20 shillings and in the following year 27 Edward I it was burned.
William the clerk of Hokyton aged 50 says the like and knows it because
he had a daughter Letice born on the same day and baptised in the same
church.
William the clerk of Gritton (sic; ?Girton) aged 60 sayd the like and
knows it because on the same day the King's purveyors of beasts took of
him two hogs, price 20 shillings, and gave him nothing.
The attorney of the Earl of Pembroke who had the wardship etc came from
the manor of Caxton but had nothing to say against the said proof"

"2 Edward III: Caxton: two parts of the manor jointly with Margaret his
wife, which by licence of the late King Edward II they purchased of
James de Frivill by fine levied in the King's Court, to hold to them

"Writ 21 January 4 Richard II: Ellen late the wife of John Frevill,
knight
Inquisition at Little Shelford, 29 January 4 Richard II: held the manor
and advowson of Little Shelford jointly with John her late husband; her
said husband died without heir of his body. She held one third part of
the manor of Caxton and a messuage in West Wratting for life by way of
dower, with reversion to Agnes the wife of John Brews, knight, by
virtue of a gift lately made to the said John de Freville in pursuance
of a licence to reenfeoff the said manor and messuage with remainder to
his son Richard, now deceased, and the aforesaid Agnes, who is still
living; Richard died without issue by Agnes.
She died 21 January last; Robert Fryvill aged 40 years and more is
brother and heir and next heir of the said John Freville; the jurors do
not know who is Ellen's next heir".

"Writs 17.9.1400; Inquisition at Cambridge 20.9.1400:
She held one third of Little Shelford in dower after the decease of
Robert Freville her husband, partly held of the King in chief as 3/4 of
a knight's fee; she died 9 August; John Cotill her son and heir is aged
24 years and more.
Writ 24.9.1400; Inquisition at Cambridge 27.9.1400:
The lands at Little Shelford are of the inheritance of Thomas Frevyll,
son and heir of Robert. He still lives, aged 40 years and more, and
they should descend to him."

William died after the marriage without issue; John died 20 December 21

Shepreth of Ann Seynt George, widow, as of her manor of Shepreth".

Lucy (Visitation of Warwickshire, 1619; cf heraldic glass formerly at
Little Shelford over the name of John Freville included Freville
impaling Lucy - seme de cross crosslets, three lucies hauriant); died
21.1.1381; IPM 4 Richard II; her brass of c1381 formerly at Little
Shelford [Monumental Brasses of Cambridgeshire]. Issue:
6a. Richard Freville, died 1375; brass formerly at Little Shelford
[Mon. Brasses]; no issue; married Agnes (who married 2ndly John de
Brewes and 3rdly William Rees, died 1410).
6b. Anne Freville, heiress of Caxton; married Bartholomew Burgoyne and
left issue (Vis. Cambridgeshire, sub Burgoyne).
5b. Robert Freville, inherited Little Shelford, 1381; died 1393 (before
28.10.1393 when the King presented to Little Shelford "by reason of the
lands and tenements late of Robert Frevylle, tenant in chief, deceased,

firstly Joan (see posts by Douglas Richardson, 2002 & 2003 speculating
that she may have been a member of the Peyvre family of Toddington &
Willian); married secondly Clarice Cotill, died 9.8.1400; IPM names her
heir as heir son John Cotill; joint brass with her husband at Little
Shelford. Issue (by first marriage):
6. Thomas Freville, born circa 1360; died 1405; brass at Little

7. William Freville, MP, born circa 1398; (see biography in History of

8. William Freville, MP (History of Parliament); named as "William
Frevyle the younger of Shelford" in Indentures of War in France with
Sir James
Ormonde, 19 Henry VI [PRO: C47/10/26/8]; Sheriff of Cambs; died circa
1481; IPM 21 Edward IV; married Joan, daughter of Sir Thomas Charlton,
MP [HoP]. Issue:
9. John Freville, died 20 December 1505; IPM 21 Henry VII. Had:
10a. William, o.v.p.s.p.; married Anne Curson.
10b. Robert Freville, born circa 1479; inherited Little Shelford, 1505;
died 10 April 1521; IPM 13 Henry VIII (PRO: C 142/36/19); will proved
at Ely 1521; married Rose; brass formerly at Little Shelford; often
stated to be a Peyton, presumably on the probate evidence of 1521 which
refers to the first trustee of her marriage settlement being Sir Robert
Peyton, but Bindoff in his House of Commons (1982) apparently states
that she was the daughter of Anthony Haselden - this also appears
incorrect (see post earlier this year); her will proved at Ely 1529.
Issue:
11a. John Freville, died 1552; IPM 6 Edward IV (PRO: C 142/95/15);
inherited Little Shelford; married Dorothy and had issue
11b. Nicholas Freville, will proved at Ely, 1547
11c. George Freville, MP; Baron of the Exchequer (see DNB)
11d Anne Freville, named in her father's will; said [post by Henry
Sutcliffe, 2002] to have married Thomas Hutton of Dry Drayton, who is
also named in Robert Freville's will; his brass of 1552 at Dry Drayton
[Mon. Brasses says his wife was Anne, but authority for this is not
stated]; left issue, including descents through the St Georges of
Hatley St George, and the Wises of Cherry Hinton.
