Following the recent thread dealing with the ancestry of Christopher
Burgoyne's wife, I have obtained a copy of the PCC will for his
ancestor Thomas Burgoyne, died 1470.
Proved Prerogative Court of Canterbury, February 1471 ("Thomas Burgoyn,
husbandman of London"), Prob 11/6:
dated July 8 Edward IV; to be buried at St Bartholomew's West
Smithfield, London; wife Isabella [deceased]; mentions the church at
Impington (Cambridgeshire); his son John; his daughters Anne and
Elizabeth; property at Longstanton, Boxworth, Fen Drayton (all
Cambridgeshire); son Thomas; daughter Alice; daughter Margaret; wife
Alice; also names Geoffrey Boleyn, and William Cheyne & John Cheyne of
[Fen] Ditton; son John executor.
The Cambridgeshire Visitations show the Burgoyne pedigree thus:
1. Bartholomew Burgoyne of Boxworth, 8 Edward III:
2a. Bartholomew Burgoyne, married Anne daughter & heir of John
Freyville of Caxton [and Little Shelford]:
3a. John Burgoyne, 22 Richard II; served as clerk to the Cambridgeshire
Justices (Roskell's History of Parliament, 1386-1421, vol ii, p 427);
married [?Alice - Roskell p 428 n1] daughter of Roger Harleston of
Essex and had at least four sons:
4d. John Burgoyne of Dry Drayton, "fourth son"; acquired the manor of
Impington by 1428; steward of Crowland Abbey's Cambridgeshire manors;
died 1435 (VCH Cambs); MP and JP for Cambridgeshire etc (Roskell);
married "daughter of Thomas Payton of Cambs" (Visitation; this is
questionable, given that his daughter also married a Peyton); five
sons, one daughter (Roskell):
5a. Grace Burgoyne married circa 1407 John Peyton, (c1393-1416)
[Roskell]; descendants were the Peytons of Wicken & Isleham, Cambs
(VCH)
5b. Richard Burgoyne, died without issue
5c. Thomas Burgoyne of Impington; MP for Cambs 1442, London 1445,
Bridgwater 1447 (Roskell HOP); died 1470; married firstly Isabella;
married secondly Alice Tay, died 1473 (VCH). Issue:
6a. John Burgoyne, of Impington; named in his father's will; died 1505;
monumental brass at Impington; married Margaret; seven sons, two
daughters
6b. Anne Burgoyne, "married Reynold Perkham of Kent" [apparently an
error in the Visitation as in the St George pedigree she is shown as
the wife of Richard St George of Hatley St George; perhaps one of her
sisters married RP]
6c. Elizabeth Burgoyne, married Thomas Chicheley
6d. Alice Burgoyne, named in her father's will
6e. Margaret Burgoyne, named in her father's will
6f. Thomas Burgoyne, of Long Stanton, Cambs; died 1507) VCH - from whom
descended Christopher Burgoyne of Long Stanton, died 1562, husband of
Thomasine Freville.
5d. William Burgoyne "of Devon" (it seems Drayton - ie Dry Drayton - is
meant here); his will was proved P.C.C. 16.11.1456; inherited the manor
of Caxton and married daughter of William Bosom of Roxton, MP (Roskell)
and had a son Richard (d 1464), father of John (d 1487), father of
Richard (dsp 1506) (VCH)
5e. Bartholomew Burgoyne
5f. John Burgoyne, apprentice-at-law, 1443-5 (Roskell)
In addition to his Cambridgeshire inheritance, Thomas Burgoyne (d 1470)
seems to have been rather involved on the London scene - see C1/47/230
from PROCAT:
"Alice, late wife of Thomas Burgoyn, late under-sheriff of London v.
Thomas Peyton Esq [ie Alice's nephew, son of Grace Burgoyne], Richard
Baynard, Lewis Baynard, John Fenge, clerk, John Belton & John
Batisford, feoffees: advowson of St Michael's church, Long Stanton,
Cambs."
The arms of the Burgoyne family was: azure, a talbot passant argent;
crest: a tiger sejant argent, attired, tufted and maned sable

From St Michael's church, Long Stanton:
"A brass fasten'd upon the screen which separates the Nave and the
Chancel, over the door of it towards the Chancel, with the following
inscription on it for the quondam Patron of this Church:
"Quisquis eris, qui transieris, sta, pro lege plora
"Su quod eris, fueram.. quod es p me precor ora.
"Hic jacet Magr~ Thomas Burgoyne

Sorry I didn't see this message before replying to your later one.
I think it is likely that John, Anne and Elizabeth were children of
Burgoyne's first marriage while Thomas, Alice and Margaret were likely of
the second marriage.
Wedgwood will be superceded by the replacement edition of HOP due in a few
years and this is a good esxample of why. I do believe that most of the
citations from VCH Camb are fairly reliable as to relationships. I think you
are wise to query the Payton/Peyton marriage as the ancestry of Rose
_________, wife of Robert Freville d. 1521 of Little Shelford has also been
found to be faulty. From memory I think she was thought to be a Haselden,
but that was disproved.
The wife John Burgoyne (1450-1505) Margaret died 1528. Two of their
daughters were Margaret (husband - George Hevingham d. 1530) and Elizabeth
(husband Thomas Thursby d. 1543).

Indeed: Alice (my 6d above) is said, per Visitation of Cambridgeshire,
Harl. Soc. Pub, sub Burgoyne, to be the daughter of the second
marriage, and to have married "Thomas Lembert [Lambert]" of Boxworth.
