Hi all,

Apparently, there is an additional finding of "Roet" arms (namely,
three Catherine wheels) in Wiltshire:

Book No. 44 Wiltshire: the topographical collections of John Aubrey,
1659-70; corrected and enlarged by John Edward Jackson. 1862
Chapter No. 26 - Engravings, Coats of Arms and Maps
Page No. 33 - Coats of arms in Mere and Stourton churches

shows three Catherine wheels on a field of gules and identified by
Aubrey as "Roet":

http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/g ... hp?id=7896

But, why??

Curioser and curioser...

Good morning to Judy and the list. _Papworth's ordinary of British
armorials_ by John W. Papworth, London: 1874, repr. London: 1961 and
Baltimore: 1965, lists about 21 men/families that have used three
Catherine wheels in arms. (I say "about" because the abbreviations,
typefaces, etc. are a bit tricky.) About seven are on a field gules,
including

"ROED, temp. Richard II. SWINFORD. Katherine ROEL, afterwards SWEYNFORD,
Duchess of Lancaster, Z, 251. [Sandford, Genealogical History, fol.,
London 1707]

Judy, I assume this is the family that interests you. I double-checked the
surname spellings, and I've typed them here exactly as they are printed,
including "ROED" and "ROEL."

Various Scott entries (my interest) are on a field argent. Cheers, Dolly

Hi Dolly,

Thanks! Aubrey stated that the Wiltshire arms were those of Roet, but,
of course, he could have been wrong. However, the "Roet" coat was
adjacent or near a coat of Plantagenet arms with a label of 3 points,
which may have been meant for John of Gaunt, which would make "Roet" a
perhaps good guess.

I _think_ I have the Papworth list somewhere... IIRC, some of the names
were post-Medieval (not Scott as I recall) and hence got crossed off my
list. With my luck, my university doesn't have a copy of Papworth...
nope, just checked. Back to ILL.

Kindest regards,

Judy

According to the Visitations of Kent (Harleian Society publications)
the arms of Scott were:

"argent, three catherine wheels sable, within a bordure engrailed
gules"
