Degrees of relatedness

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 11 aug 2005 23:00:04

I understand that in medieval times there were two ways of degrees of relatedness used. Does anyone know whether I am wrong in this, and what is the way to count relationships and what are the prohibited degrees?

Can anyone explain the degrees of relatedness as defined in the medieval period? Specifically in an instance where the couple is related twice in the third degree. What does this mean exactly?

With many thanks.

There's a useful summary by Nat Taylor here:

Dear Leo,
related in the 1st degree is sibling; related in the 2nd
degree is an own cousin ; Related in the 3rd degree is a 2nd cousin and your
specific question , related twice in the 3rd degree would be to be another`s 2nd
cousin twice over which would mean the parties were descended from two sets
of the same great grandparents in common.

I raised some questions about kindred and affinity before noting Chris
Phillips' helpful reference to Nat Taylor's discussion of the subject at

Thank you very much, Chris and Nat
