New Information on the O'Neills of Killeleagh

Hello,

While reading a fragmentary MS. history of the Earls of Antrim I
discovered an interesting digression which illuminates several
previously dark aspects of the genealogy of the O'Neills of Killeleagh
(a branch of the O'Neills of Clannaboy active in the 17th century). In
the standard O'Neill genealogy, as given in Burke's, Niall Og O'Neill
of Killeleagh (d. 1628) is assigned no wife [1] but in the aforesaid
MS. history the following appears:

"The Earl of Antrim's natural daughter was married to Neil O'Neil
grandchild to Hugh MacFelimie Lord of Claniboy. Neil O'Neil and Lady
Elis MacDonald had one son and one daughter." [2]

This most definitely refers to Niall of Killeleagh and makes what
follows particularly significant in unraveling this portion of the
genealogy as "Lady Elis" is described as having married secondly, "ye
honourable Sir Phelimie O'Neil of Kinard" by whom she had "one only son
Conll O'Neil a worthy noble gentleman" but apparently also at least one
daughter for the MS. later mentions "her grandchild Mary Phriston" [3].

To summarize, the following genealogy can be reconstructed from this
rather interesting digression:

Randal MacSorley MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim
|
(1) Niall O'Neill of = Lady Alice MacDonnell = (2) Sir Felim
O'Neill
Killeleagh | (illegitimate) | of Kinaird
| |
_____________________|_______ ______|. . . . . . . . .
..
| | |
|
Sir Henry, 1st Bt. [daughter] "Conll" Phriston =
[daughter]

Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams
