Does anyone know whether there is a site with maps? Specifially old ones of Wales and England?

Many thanks.

I'm not sure what kind of maps you want, but there are quite a few. One
useful one has the Victorian Ordnance Survey maps, which are large scale and
give a lot of local place names:

Good Morning Leo et al,
regarding old maps, http://www.maphistory.info/imagebi.html has some
rather great maps online as well as cyndi's site has some rather good
links to maps.
It is where I found Deacon Richard Botelers "Braintree" connection, at, in
Shropshire near Wem,(the barony of Wem)that the Botelers obtained thru
Maud Pantolf, the 'Hundred of Braintree', not Braintree Essex, as so many
seem to do and can go no further.
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,

One of my favorites is "Your Maps Online":

http://yourmapsonline.org.uk/

which has many Victorian or older atlas leaves, at high resolution,
county by county. These color scans are generally handsome and
usable--a good complement to the Ordnance Survey server, which works by
place-search and pulls up a more detailed area map, but in a
black-and-white quality scan.

Thank all of you for the map references. I have also found good maps on
GENUKI.
Recently, I found that Robert de Veteriponte was a benefactor of Tavistock
Abbey. Nicholas had held land ca. 1300 at Thruselton, Devon. Might anyone
suggest where "WYNEMERESTON" might be. Robert gave the monks at the
Monastery lands there. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to ascertain
the current spelling and/or location.
Help much appreciated.
Pat

Are there any sites which give the latitudes and longitudes along with
the maps?

They are not connected to maps, but I use two gazetteers which will
supply latitude and longitude. Alternate place names are also
frequently listed.

I did a search using wildcards on the PRO online catalogue, and the
Wynmarston (presumably in Hampshire) mentioned in this record seemed the
likeliest match:

SC 2/201/35
County: [Southampton].. Description of Courts: Manorial Courts. Places:
Nursling or Nutshalling (Notecholyng, Nushulling, Nutshulling Beaufoux),
with: Wynmarston; Testwood; Bury. 4 membranes or sheets.
3, 4 Ric. II. 7,8,10 Hen. IV. 3 Hen. V. 20 Hen. VI

I can't find any other reference to Wynmarston online, but Nursling and
Testwood are 4-5 miles WNW of Southampton.

Ian,
I have not placed any property for the Viponts in Gloucestershire and rather
thought this place would be somewhere in Devon. It is certainly closer to
the spelling than anything I have found.
Thank you.

Margaret Basset wife of Edmund Stafford

Legg inn av fairthorne » 10 aug 2005 23:59:01

Hi Gang

I'm having problems with Margaret Basset wife of Edmund, Lord Stafford

In CP XII/I p173 it says

Edmund married in or before 1298 Margaret daughter of Ralph and sister and
in her issue coheir of Ralph (Basset) Lord Basset (of Drayton) by Joan,
daughter of Reynold Grey of Ruthin

CP II p2/3 says

Ralph (Basset) Lord Basset married (Settlement 27 March 1304) Joan daughter
of John de Grey [Lord Grey] of Wilton and Ruthin, by his 1st wife, Anne,
daughter of William de Ferrers of Groby.

There is a proposed correction (Douglas?) that Joan appears to be the
daughter of John de Grey by his wife Maud, apparently the daughter of John
de Verdun

The problem I have is over dates
Margaret Basset married before 1298
and Ralph Basset (her father) has a marriage settlement in 1304 and was
still a minor in 1300

I'm probably having a senior moment but cannot disentangle this

cheers

Simon
