I noticed a discussion of de Poynings family members.
So, can any of you tell me anything about a
Alice de POYNINGS who married a John ORELL
or any of the stated information below.
I have Alice dying c1439 no other details on either of them.

This couple had a daughter Elizabeth ORRELL who married c1446 an ancestor of
mine called
John (Sir) BATAILLE or BATTLE or BATAILL born 1424 Essex, England. He died
1474.

What I have at present on the above Sir John BATAILLE is (from an ancestors
records in early 1900's):
so whether this information assists in identifying the person or not,
remains to be seen!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
In 1468 Sir John Bataille mortgaged half of the Manor of Magda Lever to Sir
Thomas Cooke.
Sir Thomas Cooke later ended up absolutely owning the Manor.
When his father [Thomas Bataille (1370-1439) husband of Eleanor Oudeby]
died, John was a minor so a guardian was elected namely John Leventhorpe,
[John Leventhorpe also involved in land purchase from John Bataill in 1459
near Eastwood Essex,
assumedly the brother of John's stepmother Isabel (nee Leventhorpe),(Thomas
Bataille's 3rd wife)].
1445 John came of age, Created a Knight, and inherited Manor and lands of
Ongar Park.
1451 Aug. 4th, from closed rolls,...Esquire, Escheator, of Stanford rivers
£200 levied in Kent, Essex & Sussex.
1454 Escheator in Kent, Essex & Sussex.
In 1458 he had a debt owing to the King due to having gone guarantor for the
good behaviour of Robert POYNINGS
and said Robert defaulted, so John had to forfeit 2/3rd of Ongar Park to
the king for 15 years.
Trustees for period of 19 years (not only the 15 yrs) were ???
Leveringsthorpe and ??? , lands were restored in 1473
upon a pardon being granted, one year before John died. (??? = unreadable).

Any additonal or correction to the above would be appreciated.
regards

What is your descent from this family? If it is through one of the
Virginia immigrants Mathew or John Battle, you should be aware that the
ancestry ascribed to them is incorrect. The origin of both remains
unknown, unfortunately (as you might guess from my surname, I have a
particular interest in this family).
