The Scottish competitors in 1290

Legg inn av Gjest » 07 aug 2005 05:16:01

Margaret, the Maid of Norway set sail from Norway to her new realm in the
Autumn of 1290, took ill, and died about September 26.

Patrick, the 7th (or 6th) Earl of Dunbar, and styled (at times) Comites March
died 24 Aug 1289

before Margaret died.
And yet http://www.wikipedia.org states that it was *him* who was one of the
competitors for the throne. Surely it was his son who didn't die until 1308.

Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks
Will

Dear Will,

Many of the claims to the Scots throne ca. 1291 were D.O.A., but
none of the claimants were.....

It was the 'son' Earl Patrick (d. 1308) who was the claimant.
See SP III:262, and CP IV:506.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for the confirmation. I've updated the two pages on wikipedia.com for
Patrick Dunbar who d 1308
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Du ... _of_Dunbar
and for
Patrick Dunbar who d 1289
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_de ... _of_Dunbar
to reflect that it was the d 1308 one who
was the Competitor for the Throne of Scotland.

I didn't do anything else with the two pages, but esp the 7th Earl has a
whole lot of gum-flapping about his descent which doesn't belong there.

Really someone with more knowledge should create pages for the 6th, 5th, 4th
Earls and move this stuff up to one of theirs. None of them have a page yet.
