King's Kinsman: King Henry IV's kinsman, George Dunbar, Earl

Dear Newsgroup ~

In the ongoing discussion of George Dunbar, Earl of March's kinship to
King Henry IV of England, we have seen mention made more than once of
George Dunbar's letter to King Henry IV, in which Earl George referred
to his and King Henry IV's common Comyn ancestry. For a transcript of
this important letter, see Hingeston, Royal & Hist. Letters during the
Reign of Henry the Fourth (Rolls Ser. 18) (1860): 23-25.

What has been missing so far is mention of various references in which
King Henry IV in turn referred to George Dunbar, Earl of March, as his
kinsman. Such citations may be found in my two books, Plantagenet
Ancestry and Magna Carta Ancestry as follows:

Rymer, Fœdera 7 (1728): 278-279, 323-324, 400 (instances of George
de Dunbar, Earl of March, styled "kinsman" by King Henry IV of
England),

Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1401-1405 (1905): 52-53, 99, 247
(instances of George Dunbar, Earl of March, styled "king's
kinsman" by King Henry IV of England).

Given the cross references between the two men to their common kinship,
I believe there can be no doubt that the two men were in fact closely
related to one another. Examining King Henry IV's extended ancestry,
we find that he was related to various highborn Scottish families
through his great-grandmother, Alice Comyn, a Scottish heiress. As
such, it seems a safe bet that George Dunbar was also related to King
Henry IV by way of descent from the Comyn family, or from their near
kinsfolk.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Doug,

I just noted your post of 4 August (above) this evening. This
additional documentation is much appreciated.
Their Comyn ancestry made George, Earl of Dunbar and Henry IV of
England 3rd cousin 1x removed by my count; clearly close enough to be
recognized by the King, as we know it had been mentioned in1399/1400 by
Earl George.
Cheers,

John
