_RootsWeb: GEN-MEDIEVAL-L Fenwick family of Wallington, Northumberland and
its cadet branches_
(http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GE ... 1122236066)

Roger Bertram of Brenkley (in Ponteland Parish), Northumberland, was
deceased by 1521, leaving four daughters as co-heiresses: Johanna (Bertram)
Swinburne, wife of William Swinburne of Capheaton; Isabell (Bertram) Shafto, wife of
Cuthbert Shafto of Bavington; Agnes (Bertram) Grene [widow in 1544 & died
s.p.]; and Elizabeth (Bertram) Cowdale.

John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley appeared as a witness to a will in 1571.
How did he come by his share of Brenkley? In 1573 he purchased from John
Brysko, grandson of Elizabeth (Bertram) Cowdale, his one third share of Brenkley
with an assured warranty against the heirs of Elizabeth Cowdale, widow, and
Thomas Swinburne of Capheaton. Did John Fenwick already represent the heirs
of Isabell (Bertram) Shafto in their one third share of Brenkley, and that is
why John Brysko did not have to provide warranty against their interest?

The main residence of the Shafto family was Bavington but they continued to
hold tithes in Ponteland Parish into the 1600s, and they continued to have
relations with the Fenwick family into that century as well. Cuthbert Fenwick
[likely a grandson of John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley mentioned above]
married in Ponteland Parish in 1624 to Mary Shafto [a great-granddaughter of
Cuthbert Shafto & Isabell Bertram] and received half of Great Bavington. When
Cuthbert Fenwick died by 1658 he left five daughters as co-heiresses: Katherine
(Fenwick) Fenwick, Elizabeth (Fenwick) Fenwick, Mary (Fenwick) Ogle, Frances
(Fenwick) Marshall, and Ann (Fenwick) Downes.

I am speculating at this time that John Fenwick came into the Shafto third
of Brenkley as a maritagium for his wife, possibly a daughter of John Shafto of
Bavington and Brenkley and his wife Anne Ellerker, and therefore a
granddaughter of Cuthbert Shafto of Bavington and Isabell Bertram, co-heiress of
Brenkley.
