Medieval Legal Latin Abbreviations

Legg inn av Paul Mackenzie » 22 jul 2005 23:24:22

Hi All;

I wondering if some one could recommend a book
listing medieval latin abbreviations that were
used in such documents as Inq. Post. Mortem,
Fines, Common Pleas etc.

Kind Regards

Pau

Paul, in addition to the general reference of Capelli's general
dictionary of medieval abbreviations (_Dizionario di abbreviature latine
ed italiane_ [Milan, 1929 & many later eds.]), you could look for
paleography & abbreviations specific to English legal documents in
Pierre Chaplais, _English Medieval diplomatic practice_, 2 vols.
(London: HMSO, 1975-82); and L. C. Hector, _The Handwriting of English
documents_ (1958, repr. 1980).

Chris Phillips' amazing site provides some basics from Hector (with
scanned plates):

Chris has a page of links for related online & printed resources at:

Oops--I see this is a link outside Chris' site. It is on the site
"bibliographics.com" (Deana Fowler of Skowhegan, Maine), though linked
from Chris' subject guide page:

http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/guide/hand.shtml

By the way, idle trolling shows that bibliographics.com has complete
digitized images of the Ordnance Survey map of Roman Britain.

Not a handy little list, but a 464-page tome:
_The record interpreter: A collection of abbreviations, Latin words and
names used in English historical manuscripts and records_. Charles Trice
Martin. Orig. pub. London, 1898, 2nd ed. 1910. Reprinted 1997, 2003 by
Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD. ISBN 0-8063-0236-4.

I'd think it might be found in larger libraries. Perhaps someone on the
list will recommend a more compact reference.

As well as the more comprehensive references that have been pointed out,
there is _Introduction to the Study of the Pipe Rolls_ (London, 1884
reprinted Liechtenstein, 1996) with an excellent table of abbreviations.

Paul, I will bring a photopocy of this for you when I come to the Sunshine
Coast in a few weeks.
