These were two distinct names, from different origins: Sarah was the
wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac; Susanna was a Roman martyr, revered
as a saint for preserving her virginity at the cost of her life when
ordered to marry.
Given this background, that would have been well known in 16th/17th
century England, it is most unlikely that a mistake could have been
made except from, possibly, misreading an abbreviation of "Susannah" as
"Sarah".

Dear Newsgroup Members,
As has been indicated the names
Sarah and Susannah aren`t interchangable, but the following were considered
interchangable with Sarah ; Sally , Sal and Sadie
The Following are Sometimes considered interchangable
with Susannah ; Susie / Suzie, Suzanne, Sukey, Susan, Susann, Suze, Nancy
(also a nickname for Ann/ Anna / Joanna) and occasionally Anna and variants
though names by themselves. Now for the probable corrections and additions. ...

Hebrew etymology is beside the point for the question that was raised - this
would not have been known to most writers in the 17th century, whereas the
people in the Bible and martyrology from whom these names came into currency
(not directly from Hebrew, but from translations) were well-known.

My apologies if my reply was inappropriate.
I was simply trying to demonstrate that at least one part of the query
was false, namely, that the two are separate names. As you and others
have indicated, the rest of the query is similarly false, namely, that
they were apparently distinct for the time period in the place so
named.

Your post was not at all inappropriate - this added to the information that
was sought & given already, and there can be only good & no harm in sharing
more than is strictly relevant to one person's enquiry.
If I was abrupt, my apologies are due. I was trying to clarify that two
distinct Hebrew names could become interchangeable if their currency
converged at some point in some other culture, but that this didn't happen
with Sarah and Susannah.

O what dreary, redictable rubbish from Hines - unable to score a hit, any
hit, he vainly fries some more air....
I am not reetreating in any way from anything I said, only explaining this
further.
People come to SGM for informaiton and take notes into their own research:
if anyone had taken one to the effect that Susannah and Sarah could not be
interchangeable because these names came from distinct Hebrew originals,
they would be missing the point. So I clarified it.
No untenable position, no buck and wing, just commonsense.
Needless to say, this passes over the head of Hines, that is bowed and
twisted by his spineless & contorted attitudes on all things.

No Sale.
Peter was trying to do a little protective arse-covering -- after he
posted a very silly-buggers statement.
Ergo, he had to walk the cat back and try to hide behind a small,
dried-out fig leaf.
But he failed on both counts.
Sarah and Susannah are two quite separate names.
Throwing up a cloud of gorilla dust to the effect that IF "currencies

very characteristic of Stewart's cunniculan-pygan approach to
ratiocination.

Re: Susanna & Sarah, Interchangeable?
O what unutterable rot.
Two names from different Hebrew or other roots could well converge in the
usage of another language. This did not happen with Sarah and Susannah, and
could not have done anyway since the originals for the modern currency of
these names were too well-known. That is the point I have made consistently,
only amplified and clarified when it was taken that a post of mine had
dismissed another poster.
I don't like to cause unwarranted insult to anyone - unlike Hines, of
course, who always richly deserves any that come his way.

A prize for the idiot Hines this time: he has gone beyond even the
Richardson low in balntat falsehood and self-serving misrepresentation.
My ORIGINAL POST on this matter is copied below his blather. I STARTED with

different origins", the very thing Hines accuses me of now "admitting" only
because he has "backed me into a corner".
Can he get any more stupid than this?

These were two distinct names, from different origins: Sarah was the
wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac; Susanna was a Roman martyr, revered
as a saint for preserving her virginity at the cost of her life when

Given this background, that would have been well known in 16th/17th

You are quite right, Symon.
The trouble, that Todd Farmerie and presuambly others don't understand, is
that if nobody says so Hines imagines that nobody thinks so.
His congnitive skills are twisted out of shape by his massive ego, and the
message can only get through by coming at him from more and more quarters,
more and more often. This is finally starting to happen on SGM, a process
that will not take for ever to achieve whatever benefits may be possible.
Some, like Todd Farmerie, are not prepared for this to be tried at any
inconvenience to themselves, and cast aspersions on everone who makes the
attempt. They should recall that things were no better before, when
Richardson and Hines were given comparatively free rein for their lies and
nonsense.
And they should take the trouble to go back over threads before complaining
about them to see where and how they were derailed: it is usually from a
criticism on-topic of some untenable assumption or faulty analysis by
Richardson, some jackass comment or mistaken pedantry from Hines, some glib
or unseemly one-liner from Brandon, that these people can't or won't accept
when everyone else can see they are in the wrong. Then we have to plod
through their repertoire of arrogance, deceit, misrepresentations and
blatant lies. Todd would have the critics leave off at some arbitrary point
along the way, so that the miscreants can yell and hool about us "bucking
and weaving" or "heading for the tall grass" with impunity. This won't
happen - so that posts demanding this are just more vexatious noise.

I, also a lurker, offer this:
Apparently, Mr. D'Vebre, you don't practice what you preach. Just a couple

It is time that _all_ stopped this bickering. I have asked Mike Welch

Peter Stewart
---------------------------
No, he wasn't "abrupt" -- just farblondjet.
However, he quite clearly implied that the two names COULD have become
interchangeable -- but didn't.
Then Stewart pontificates with more blather and throws up a cloud of
gorilla dust. This was one of his stupider posts -- because he wanders
off into irrelevancy rather than just answering the question:
Katheryn_Swynford" <katheryn_swynf...@yahoo.com> wrote in message
news:1122176636.411485.147710@z14g2000cwz.googlegroups.com...
"Hebrew etymology is beside the point for the question that was raised -
this would not have been known to most writers in the 17th century,
whereas the people in the Bible and martyrology from whom these names
came into currency (not directly from Hebrew, but from translations)
were well-known. "
Peter Stewart
-------------------------------
Finally, AFTER I caught him _in flagrante delicto_ and he realized the
game was up -- Pogue Peter came clean and ADMITTED the names Sarah and
Susannah could NOT have become interchangeable ---- but first he throws
up some more gorilla dust for cover and makes a feeble attempt to heave
another grenade at DR concerning David Kelley, about whom he and DR
previously had a sharp conflict:
"The name Gausfred (Geoffrey) used mainly in West Frankish families has
become dovetailed into "Gottfried" in modern German usage along with the
original of the latter name, Godefrid (Godfrey), that was used mainly in
East Frankish families. David Kelley was misled by this - and NOTHING
MORE THAN THIS - into his nonsensical assumptions about Godfrey de
Bouillon and Geoffrey fitz Eustace.
"Nothing like this could have happened with Sarah and Susannah."
Peter Stewart
-----------------------------------
So, as we see, you have to watch Stewart VERY closely.
He's a clever liar, an Artful Dodger and he practices the buck and wing
tap dance every day.
------------------------------------
Stewart should admit more OFTEN when he is TOTALLY DEFEATED by his
betters and hoist with his own petar -- then he should go to the corner

"If I was abrupt, my apologies are due. I was trying to clarify that two
distinct Hebrew names could become interchangeable if their currency
converged at some point in some other culture, but that this didn't
happen with Sarah and Susannah."

Isn't Susanna[h] a variation on the Hebrew "Shoshona"?
And aren't they thus both [distinct] Hebrew names?
------------------------------------
Stewart should admit more OFTEN when he is TOTALLY DEFEATED by his
betters and hoist with his own petar -- then he should go to the corner
of the room on his own -- without further instruction.

Apparently, Mr. D'Vebre, you don't practice what you preach. Just a

Victoria, it just doesn't get any better than this!
THEN:
FINALLY -- since I have forced him into a corner with his back right up

quite DISTINCTIVE names, are NOT interchangeable and that all the
gorilla dust he was throwing up had absolutely NOTHING to do with THESE
two names.
Vide infra.
Hilarious!
But:
A Step Forward...
Stewart should admit more OFTEN when he is TOTALLY DEFEATED by his

These were two distinct names, from different origins: Sarah was the
wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac; Susanna was a Roman martyr, revered
as a saint for preserving her virginity at the cost of her life when
ordered to marry.
Given this background, that would have been well known in 16th/17th
century England, it is most unlikely that a mistake could have been
made except from, possibly, misreading an abbreviation of "Susannah" as
"Sarah".

Same goes here no need to apologise. My friendship with Doug goes back
16 yrs when I was only 25. I have one person to thank for that Mr
Sheppard. I asked him about a line in his book and he told me he
doesn't know anything. That he never checked sources and couldn't
comment on any line in the book cause he didn't know. I found that
strange you put your name on a book cover and you don't know whats
going in it. Then he told me to contact Doug.
We been friends ever since.

If you mean AR7 that was published just over 16 years ago, the title page
credited Frederick Lewis Weis as author, "with additions and corrections by
Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. assisted by David Faris" - in this instance,
Sheppard might well not know about a particular line in the book, or about
the sources for any material that had not been corrected or augmented by
himself.
If it was a different book you quizzed him over, in any case he was honest
and referred you to someone who might be able to answer; though I agree this
would be very curious for a work appearing with Sheppard's name as the sole
author. Was that the case?

Mr. Sanders,
I wish you had paid careful attention to my earlier post. You may have noticed that it was liberally sprinkled with insults directed to the merry band of misfits that have held this list hostage with their useless prattle over the last few weeks. There was not an ounce of whining in the post, if you recall, I said that I usually "found the exchanges entertaining." I did highlight the personal antagonism that Dougie has for Leo. I also called Hines "stupid" and a "misfit" and I stand by those evaluations of the "man's" intellect and character. I saw no need to mention his personal attacks, because I seriously doubted that anyone on this list or elsewhere holds him in high regard.
As a lurker, to my shame, I did hold DR in some regard. His continued antagonism against Leo has continued for too long in my 'imperfect' opinion and I felt that it was past time for me to take a stand against the band of misfits. I fail to see my hypocrisy. In fact, I wondered for a few moments if you believed I had posted something besides my previous two posts. I have never claimed to be a 'nice' person, nor to be perfect. I do have a flair for seeing injustice and depravity.
As far as practicing what I preach is concerned, I had not realized my first post was a sermon. I thought it was a "full broadside" aimed at the misfit horde menacing the list. The only thing needed for shameless behavior to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

My ORIGINAL POST on this matter is copied below his blather. I STARTED

Hilarious!
Stewart is still backing, filling, bucking, winging and throwing up
clouds of gorilla dust.
Victoria, it just doesn't get any better than this!
THEN:
FINALLY -- since I have forced him into a corner with his back right up
against the wall -- Stewart ADMITS that _SARAH_ and _SUSANNAH_ are two
quite DISTINCTIVE names, are NOT interchangeable and that all the
gorilla dust he was throwing up had absolutely NOTHING to do with THESE
two names.
Vide infra.
Hilarious!
But:
A Step Forward...
Stewart should admit more OFTEN when he is TOTALLY DEFEATED by his
betters and hoist with his own petar -- then he should go to the corner
of the room on his own.
If he does that more often -- as he also did on "Uriah Heap" [sic]
he will find, when he wakes up in the morning, his arse does
not look and feel so bruised and bloody from the kickings I have been
giving it in these newsgroups, when he does stupid and unforgivable
things.
NOW:
He owes Douglas Richardson a heartfelt apology for the many
transgressions he has made against DR and he should also call off the
little Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke -- Leo -- who has been his
faithful sidekick and subservient Igor in the malicious assaults on DR.
Secondly, Stewart and his Igor -- Leo -- BOTH need to take a hot toddy
and a long nap -- together or separately -- I really don't give a damn
which.
'Nuff Said.

These were two distinct names, from different origins: Sarah was the
wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac; Susanna was a Roman martyr, revered
as a saint for preserving her virginity at the cost of her life when
ordered to marry.
Given this background, that would have been well known in 16th/17th
century England, it is most unlikely that a mistake could have been
made except from, possibly, misreading an abbreviation of "Susannah" as
"Sarah".

No same book I received the book in June of 1989. I talked to him in
Aug of that year. I also had talked to David Faris a very humble man. I
just found it funny in the respect that some of his line's he put in
his book was from his own research. I know if I put my name on

Mr. Misfit's posts used to have a touch of entertainment value, but over the past few months the hamster turning his wheel seems to have departed. Has some personal crisis unhinged him? Has he spent too much time on Giligan's Isle? Or has he simply wandered too far into the vast frontier of stupidty and while plumbing it depths, completely lost his way?

I don't think he meant to overtake Weis either in the authorship credit,
obviously, or in popular assumptions about his involvement with everything
that Weis had compiled earlier - he is only identified with "additions and
corrections", along with Faris, so that he was not taking responsibility for
all that had gone into previous editions but not come under his scrutiny for
correction/addition.
If he had put "revised by" Walter Sheppard or raised himself to
co-authorship, this would be a different matter. All the same, it does seem
odd to palm off an enquirer by saying he didn't know & couldn't comment
about any line in the book. But wasn't he old by then and perhaps ailing?

Hilarious!
That over-heated sentence seems to have escaped from one of Pogue
Peter's Harry Potter reviews.
Deeeeelightful!
My spine is neither twisted nor tingling with fear -- it's quite
straight and presently getting a wonderful massage from my inamorata.
I'm "tingling" -- but certainly not from fear.
Pogue Peter reads Rowling but not Dickens -- no WONDER he flunked out of
Oxford.
Or perhaps _The Tingler_ [1959] has just been playing on late-night
Australian television.
Todd A. Farmerie, as usual, has done absolutely the wrong thing at just
the right time for it to have maximum impact. He has a magnificent
genius for doing that.
Farmerie's vicious, premeditated attack on Peter Stewart has emboldened
the sock puppet "lurkers", who would otherwise have remained on the
sidelines, meek and mild, to emerge and jump into the fray.
I'm sure that's EXACTLY what Todd wanted.
The man Farmerie must have a brain the size of a walnut under that
unruly mop of hair.
Veronique, it just doesn't get any better than this. Break out another
bottle of champagne and please hand me that plate of sashimi.
Todd Farmerie has, as Russell Crowe put it in Gladiator, "Unleashed
Hell".
Abundanza!
Stay Tuned.

Hans 'The Bird Man' is definitely the funniest poster we have seen here
in years.
Do keep it up Hans -- you are better than Papageno any day.
