Dear Newsgroup ~
In recent time, I was going through the published volumes of the Report
on the Manuscripts of Lord de Lisle & Dudley preserved at Penshurst
Place. In Volume 3, pp. 308-309, there is the transcript of a letter
from Sir William Browne to Viscount Lisle. In the letter, Browne
states the following:
"But in that sally the Baron de Flaix, the French King's kinsman, was
taken by the enemy and so remains." [Reference: William A. Shaw,
editor, Report on the Manuscripts of Lord de Lisle & Dudley preserved
at Penshurst Place, 3 (Hist. MSS Comm. 77) (1936): 308-309].
In a footnote on pg. 308, Mr. Shaw, the modern editor, identifies Baron
de Flaix as Frederick, Comte de Gerson & de Flaix, Vicomte de Meille,
Baron d'Aymet, Levignac, etc. Shaw states: "... He became a Conseiller
du Roy and Mareschal de Camp and in 1616 grand Mareschal de Guienne and
in 1622 captured Aymet and Monse from the Huguenots. In 1611 he
married Charlotte de Caumont and died in 1655."
Mr. Shaw adds: "Brown refers to this Comte de Fleix as the French
King's kinsman, but the relationship between him and Henry IV was a
distant one." Shaw goes onto provide a chart on pg. 310 which displays
a kinship between the two men in the 6th and 7th degrees.
Based on my own extensive research into such kinships, one should
expect for the kinship to fall within the fifth degree on at least one
side. Does such a kinship exist?
Studying the families involved, I've determined that yes, King Henry IV
and Frederick, Comte de Gerson and Flaix, were in fact related in the
5th degree of kindred by way of common descent from Gaston IV, Comte de
Foix, died 1472, by his wife, Eleanor, Queen of Navarre.
l. Gaston IV, Count de Foix, d. 1472
2. Gaston de Foix, Prince de Viana, d. 1470
3. Catherine, Queen of Navarre
4. Henry II of Navarre
5. Joanna = Anthony of Bourbon
6. Henry IV, King of France
1. Gaston IV, Comte de Foix, d. 1472
2. Catherine de Foix, Infanta of Navarre = Gaston II de Foix, Comte de
Candale
3. Gaston III de Foix, Comte de Candale
4. Frederic de Foix, Comte de Candale
5. Charlotte Diane de Foix = Louis de Foix, Comte de Gerson
6. Frederick, Comte de Gerson & de Fleix
So, the two men were related within the 5th degree, they being 4th
cousins to one another.

Dear Newsgroup ~
I just checked the following links for the Foix and Albret families:
http://genealogy.euweb.cz/foix/foix3.html
http://genealogy.euweb.cz/foix/albret2.html#JN
They confirms that Gaston IV, Count of Foix, is common to the ancestry
of both King Henri IV of France and Frederic, Comte de Gerson.
