Thomas Hampden, Esquire, of Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire
Dear Newsgroup ~
I've posted below an updated account of Thomas Hampden, Esquire (died
1485), of Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire, and his wife, Margery Popham.
My research indicates that Thomas Hampden was never knighted. Also,
I've found no evidence that he and his wife, Margery, had a daughter
named Isabella.
Margery Popham's 2nd marriage to Richard Godfrey, Esquire (died 1501),
of Northill, Bedfordshire, will doubtless be of interest to many
parties on the newsgroup. I believe Richard Godfrey's sister, Ellen
Godfrey, wife of John Skipwith, is an ancestress of Chris Phillips,
Michael Welch, and other newsgroup members.
If anyone has further particulars to add to the account below, I'd
appreciate hearing from them here on the newsgroup.

Dear Newsgroup ~
As a followup to my earlier post today on the Hampden family, I should
mention that there is information online in Ancestry World Tree Project
which gives the following marriages for Thomas Hampden's known four
daughters:
1. Alice, married Robert Whitney.
2. Katherine, married _____ Goldington.
3. Jane, married John Scott.
4. Eleanor, married Humphrey Cotes.
The sources for these marriages are supposed to be:
Putman Family by Even Putman; Hist and Antuquities of the County of
Buckingham; Victoria History of the Counties of England; Visitation of
the County of Buckingham.
Can anyone confirm any of the above four marriages? Is Robert Whitney
above by any chance connected to the immigrant, John Whitney, of
Watertown, Massachusetts.

Dear Newsgroup ~
I've checked the National Archives catalog just now. I found an item
dated 1495/6 which mentions Margery, wife of John Egerton, who was the
daughter of a Humphrey Cotes, Esq., who married an Eleanor. The record
also implies that Eleanor, widow of Humphrey Cotes, Esq., married (2nd)
Edward Cheyne, Esq.
It seems entirely possible that Eleanor, wife of Humphrey Cotes, Esq.,
mentioned in the record below is the same person as Eleanor, daughter
of Thomas Hampden, Esq., mentioned in the Ancestry World Tree Project,
who allegedly married Humphrey Cotes.
Can anyone provide additional particulars on these people?

Dear Newsgroup ~
Since posting the item below from the National Archives catalog, I've
located a pedigree for the Cotes family of Cotes, Staffordshire. It
shows that a Humphrey Cotes, Esq., of Cotes, married Eleanor Blount and
died at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. The Cotes pedigree does not
include a daughter, Margery, for this couple. Regardless, it seems
likely that this is Humphrey and Eleanor Cotes who who are mentioned in
the item I copied from the National Archives catalog.

It seems entirely possible that Eleanor, wife of Humphrey Cotes, Esq.,
mentioned in the record below is the same person as Eleanor, daughter

who allegedly married Humphrey Cotes.
Can anyone provide additional particulars on these people?

Re: Thomas Hampden, Esquire, of Great Hampden, Buckinghamshi
Another pedigree of the Cotes family [see Marshall or Whitmore for citation]
also shows Humphrey Cotes who d. at Bosworth as married to Eleanor Blount of
Kinlet (NOT Hampden) but makes no mention of any other marriage for Eleanor.
This pedigree does show a daughter Margaret for the couple but with a
different husband than John Egerton - this Margaret and her husband do have
living descendants.
The Egerton pedigrees [also cited in Marshall and Whitmore] don't give a
Hampden spouse to this John Egerton but do give him, with some doubt, a
Cotes wife of unspecified parentage (but with some possibly interesting
descendants).
But the connection of all of this to Hampden seems pretty tenuous, since the
Cotes pedigree shows no marriage to a Hampden. All you have is a web
database saying an Eleanor Hampden mar. Humphrey Cotes and a National
Archives item saying that Eleanor Blount (not Hampden) married Humphrey
Cotes and Edward Cheyne. Looks like quite a stretch....
