La Roche, Cicon and Ghisi

Legg inn av Gjest » 10 jul 2005 11:45:53

Several worldconnect databases cite AEY, which I understand is an
Ancestry of Elizabeth of York, compiled by Marlyn Lewis, as the source
for the following line:

Agnesina Ghisi, m. Odon de Cicon

Geoffrey de Cicon, m. a daughter of Geoffrey de Villehardouin, Prince
of Achaia

daughter, m. Guy de la Roche, Duke of Athens, d. 1263

Guy and his wife are ancestors of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, hence, I
imagine, many group members.

Is this line solid? I see that it doesn't feature in genealogics or in
the archives of this group. If it is sound, is Agnesina a daughter of
one of the Venetian Ghisi brothers who seized the Sporades and other
Aegean possessions in the early 13th century?

Thanks,

Mark

The information that found its way to Marlyn Lewis is incorrect and was
apparently derived, ultimately if not directly, from _Histoire généalogique
des sires de Salins, au comté de Bourgogne_ by J-B Guilleaume (Besançon,
1782). His confusion over this line was pointed out (not for the first time)
by Jean Longnon in 'Les premiers ducs d'Athènes et leur famille', _Journal
des savants_ (Jan-Mar 1973 ) p. 77.

Othon de Cicon was actually the son of Sibille de la Roche, sister of Othon
I, seigneur of Athens, so that any such marriage as given above for his
alleged granddaughter would have been incestuous anyway.

Guilleaume confused Othon de Cicon's son with a completely different man,
Geoffrey de Briel, seignur of Karytaina & Skorta, who married the only
recorded daughter of Geoffrey de Villehardouin, prince of Achaia - for the
latter family see Ernest Petit, 'Généalogies féodales: les sires de
Villehardouin', _Mémoires de la Société académique d'agriculture, des
sciences, arts et belles-lettres du département de l'Aube_ 76 (1912).
