Anne PELHAM wife of William CORBET of Lee & Sibbesdon

Dear Group,

I am having a look at Anne Pelham, wife of William Corbet of Lee and
Sibbesdon, he died 1603. Alumni Cantabrigienses (1) makes her the
daughter of Sir William Pelham and cites the 1623 Visitation of
Shropshire as its source which could be regarded as reliable given the
person signing the Visitation would be the grandson of Sir William Pelham.

There was a Sir William Pelham who died in 1587. He was a significant
military commander of the reign of Elizabeth. Sir William married
Eleanor, daughter of Henry Neville, earl of Westmorland, and was the
ancestor of the Pelhams of Brocklesby, Lincolnshire. (2) This Sir
William Pelham left a will in which he mentions his, at that point,
unmarried daughter Anne (3).

William Corbet and his wife Anne had a son, Sir Pelham Corbet (4)
suggesting the name Pelham was very important to them.

However, I believe (from an online source) that the Visitation of
Worcester says Anne Pelham married Thomas Packington not William Corbet
although given William Corbet died in 1603 it is possible she married
him as her second husband.

I am curious as to whether anyone else has looked at this question and
if so what conclusions they have come to.

thanks
Louise

Perhaps this is of use? The published visitation was taken from
various manuscripts in the British Museum. None was taken from the
original documents then, as now, in the College of Arms. The
base manuscript used is Harl. 1043 and this is the part that appears in
the volume in Roman print. Manuscripts Harl 1043 and 1566 each
contained unique additional material and such are printed in italics.
Material from manuscripts 1352 and 1486 was put, it seems, in square
brackets. The editor, Phillimore, wrote near the end of his preface:

"Useful as the present issue by the Harleian Society must be to
students of Worcestershire family history, still it should be viewed
as merely a rough guide which cannot supersede the necessity of
separate investigation. In this respect it is of course no better
nor worse than many other manuscript volumes which are preserved in
the Harleian Collection at the British Museum."

All that said, on page 103 it shows in Roman (ie more faithful
material) that a second son of Sir Thomas Packington and Dorothy Kittson
was Thomas. In italics is added that he married "Anne da. of Sr William
Pelham of Brocklesby in com. Lincon Knt. Mr of Ordinance & Lord Justice
of Ireland." and it shows, also in italics, that they had a son Thomas
Pakington.

I should add that this is nominally the 1569 visitation. Some of the
material in italics may have been added much later to any of those
documents.
