Hello All,

In correcting the pedigree of the Flemings of Barrochan [1],
both Alexander Hamilton and Robert Cunyngham of Cayon have
'acquired' a descent from the Mures of Rowallan. This includes
John Mure of Rowallan (d. 1495) and his wife Elizabeth Stewart,
identified by Sir William Mure as 'Elizabeth Stewart daughter to
the first Lord Evandale' [2].

Most sources give this Elizabeth as a sister to Andrew, 2nd
Lord Avondale, and niece of the first Lord since Andrew
Stewart, 1st Lord Avondale (d. 1488). Because he had entailed his
lands on his nephew Alexander Stewart by a charter dated 4 Jan
1485/6 [3], it has been assumed that he therefore had no surviving
issue, and therefore Elizabeth must have been his niece, and
daughter of Walter Stewart of Morphie.

Andrew B. W. MacEwen has observed that this entail only means
that Lord Avondale entailed his lands on his nephew - presumably,
he wished to have his lands continue in the Stewart family and not
pass to another family [4]. There is no evidence in this that
he died sine prole, and therefore the records used by Sir
William Mure which show he had a daughter (allegedly by a daughter
of Alexander Lindsay, Earl of Crawford) is not to be dismissed.
The statement in Mure should be verified if possible, but is not
incorrect on its face, and the reconstructions based on this
premise require reevaluation.

Following is a pedigree based upon this descent, down to the
Hamiltons of Grange and Cunynghams of Cayon. Should anyone have
further documentation, comment or criticism, please advise.

Cheers,

John *
