Some support for the alleged Brampton-Shelley marriage

The item below, from _Calendar of the Plea and Memoranda Rolls of the
City of London_, volume 3 (1381-1412), offers modest support for the
statement, in some old pedigrees, that William Brampton, citizen of
London and parliamentary burgess, married a Shelley (as one of his
wives, at least). [William Brampton was an ancestor of the Whitfields
and Waterses who have New England descendants.]

4 Feb. 1396

Bond of William Brampton and William Askham, citizens of London, John
Pasford and Richard Shelle, clerk, in £200 that Thomas Shelle,
esquire, and Dame Juliane his wife would acquit and discharge John
Fabyan and Thomas Paynel and the lands, tenants, executors and heirs of
Sir Bernard Brocas, knight, senior, of any claim to 200 marks, that
being the sum in which Sir Bernard and Dame Juliane and the said John
Fabyan and Thomas Paynel as their sureties had been bound in the
Exchequer for the wardship of the manor of Ferle (Footnote 3) co.
Southampton, and the marriage of Bernard, son and heir of Sir Edmund de
Mussenden, knight.

Thanks for the nice post, John. Very helpful.

Sir Bernard Mussenden (or Missenden) whose marriage was the subject of
the London bond dated 1396 is ancestral to two 17th Century New World
colonists, Thomas Owsley and Thomas Yale. Juliane, wife of Thomas
Shelley, Knt., who is mentioned in the bond was his mother [see Roskell
et al., House of Commons 1386-1421, 4 (1992): 353-355 (biog. of
Thomas Shelley)].

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
