These items following may belong to Matthew Craddock of London, a
prominent early member of the Massachusetts-Bay Company (I think George
Craddock, an 18th century immigrant to Boston, may have claimed descent
from this Matthew). As I recall, one of the wives of John Endicott was
also called a 'cousin' of Matthew Craddock.

Parliament, 1640-1641: A Biographical Study of Its Members_.

Re: Matthew Craddock on A2A
Actually, George Craddock could not be a descendant of Matthew Craddock
(also known as 'Governor Craddock,' because he was governor of the
Massachusetts Bay Company in England), judging from this note in NEHGR,
64:84-87:
Andrewes v. Glover. 6 Aug. 1644. Orator Thomas Andrewes, Citizen and
Leatherseller of London, and Damaris his wife, Samuel Craddocke of
Thisleton, co Rutland, clerk, and Samuel Craddocke son and heir
apparent of Samuel Craddocke, Matthew Cr[_illegible_], John Craddock,
Sarah Craddocke, Elizabeth Craddocke, Rebecca Craddocke, Dorothy
Craddocke, Jane Craddocke, Audrey Craddocke, and Hanna Craddocke,
children of Samuel Craddocke. Matthew Craddocke of London, Merchant,
owned lands in New England, made his will 9 Nov. 1640, and gave one
third to his wife Rebecca, another third part to Damaris **his only
child**, mentioned brother Samuel Craddocke, Samuel Craddocke junior,
a student in Emanuel College, Matthew another son of Samuel, brother
and sister Sawyer, sister Dorothy Sawyer. Damaris has married your
Orator Thomas Andrewes, Rebecca the exor. has married Richard Glover of
Plashett, Essex, gent. Legaceys and discovery of Testators estate.
Defts Ric. Glover and Rebecca his wife. Hanna Jordan cousin of Matthew
the Testator. Testator died 27 May 1641. Richard Glover and Rebecca
married 11 March 1642. [Many interesting details as to ships and trade
mentioned in this suit.] (Chancery Bills and Answers, Charles I.,
A51:60.)

Rev. Samuel Craddock, a student at Emmanuel College at the date of Gov.
Craddock's death, was afterward at North Cadbury, Somerset, and became
a Nonconformist divine and writer, dying at Bishops Stortford, Herts.
in 1706. During his life he inherited money from the estate of Walter
Craddock of Wickhambrook, Suffolk, a branch of the family descended
from an uncle of Gov. Craddock.
Richard Glover, who married Gov. Craddock's widow, was of
Plashett, Essex, near Ham and not far from London. On the death of
Glover his widow married Dr. Benjamin Whitchcote of Emmanuel College,
sometime minister of St. Lawrence Jury, London, and son of Christopher
Whichcote, of Stoke, Salop, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Edward
Fox of Grete, Salop. Dr. Whichcote died in May 1683, aged 74.
I've noticed that the IGI has an extracted entry for the marriage of
Thos. Sawier and Dorothy Craddocke, 5 Feb. 1615 at St. Mary's,
Stafford. This may be the "sister Dorothy Sawyer" mentioned in the
will of Matthew Craddock.
_HOP_, 1558-1603, gives a brief notice of Walter Craddock, mentioned
above:
CRADOCK, Walter (1584-1657), of Wickhambrook, Suff.
b. 1584, 1st s. of Francis Cradock of Brocton, Staffs. and London by
Mirabelle, da. of William Byrde of London. _educ._ Emmanuel, Camb.

Re: Matthew Craddock on A2A
NEHGR, 8:27, says, "Zachary Cradock of London, Esq, and George Cradock
of Boston, Esq. New England, America, are the only surviving sons of
John Cradock from Matthew Cradock" [apparently from a manuscript dated
1735 and owned by George of Boston].
This makes the following family group interesting (from the IGI):
All Saints, Dorchester, Dorset
Mary Craddock, dau. John and Elizabeth, 29 Nov. 1678
Zechariah Craddock, son John and Elizabeth, 6 Feb. 1680
George Craddock, son John and Elizabeth, 4 Nov. 1684
[other children listed].

Re: Matthew Craddock on A2A
Looks like NEHGR, 64:85, offers a small correction to the new ODNB
sketch of Dr. Ralph Cudworth, which states: "In the same year he
[Cudworth] married Damaris Andrewes, the wealthy widow of Thomas
Andrewes of New Fish Street, London. She may have been the daughter of
Matthew Cradock, a London merchant. Through her first marriage she had
a son, Thomas Andrewes, who was a fellow of Christ's College from 1669
to 1675, and a daughter, Damaris, who married Edward Abney, who was a
fellow of the college from 1655 to 1661. Through her marriage to
Cudworth she had at least three sons, John, Charles, and Thomas, and a
daughter, also called Damaris." The NEHGR says, "Thomas Andrews and
Damaris Craddock had a daughter Damaris. This granddaughter of Gov.
Craddock married Sir Edward Abney. 'Edward Abney of Wilsley, Co.
Derby, gent, bachr aged 29 second son of James Abney of the same. Esqr.
and Damaris Andrewes Spinr. about 18 dau. of Thomas Andrewes the
younger, late of St Margaret's, New Fish Street, London, dec'd, with
consent of her mother, Damaris Cudworth, alias Andrewes, now wife of
Dr. Ralph Cudworth, Master of Christ's College, Cambridge ...'." So it
seems certain that Matthew Craddock's daughter Damaris married second
to Ralph Cudworth, as Chancery Bills and Answers, Charles I., A51:60
(cited on same page of NEHGR) shows that Damaris, wife of Thomas
Andrewes, is identical with Damaris, daughter of Matthew Craddock.
