I understand that Isabel/Elizabeth Burley, who m. Sir John Hopton of
Prilleston, Norfolk, (d. aft 1377) was the daugher of Sir John Burley
(and not William as often reported). (See prior posts, copied below.)
But was her mother Alice de Grey, daughter of Richard de Grey, the 6th
Lord Wilton?
Thanks in advance,
Roger

Subject: Descent of Sir Thomas Hopton from Ela de Herdeburgh
Dear Newsgroup ~
<snip>
By 1377, the Hopton properties including Prilleston were in the hands
of a Sir John Hopton, presumably Walter's nephew, who married Isabel
Burley, daughter of Sir John Burley, K.G., of Birley, co. Hereford
(see, for example, Desc. Catalogue of Ancient Deeds 3 (1900): 195).
This last named couple are known to have been the great-grandparents
of Sir Thomas Hopton, living 1445 (see G. Beltz Memorials of the Most
Noble Order of the Garter (1861), pp. 257-260). Sir Thomas Hopton,
living 1445, in turn is ancestral to two colonists, Richard More of
the Mayflower and Robert Abell.

of William BURLEY.

I can't really fit this into a proper time frame but this is what the
1623 Visitation says for Hopton of Stanton:
[Having looked at my copy last night, there is a slight correction to
be
made here]
Sir John Burley, Kt of the Garter
l
Sir Roger Burley m. Lucy Gilford
l
Sir John Burley m. Alice Pembrigge
l
Wiliam Burley m. Alice Gray, dau of Lord Gray of Wilton
[The visitation names him John, not William Burley (and of course the
daughter is Eliz. Burley).
l
Elizabeth Gray m. Sir John Hopton
l
Sir Walter Hopton m. Joane Yonge of Sibton
l
Thomas Hopton m. Jane Mortimer
l
Thomas Hopton m. Eleanor Lucy
l
Elizabeth Hopton m. Roger Corbet(1415-1467), son of Robert
I'd appreciate any feedback on this, any corrections and additons,
especially with some good source citations. <G> It would be great if
we could finally identify Margaret.
Unless I have all of my Burleys confused, I see a problem here. Based
on the Burley post the other day, Elizabeth above was sister of William
Burley, and hence of your proposed Margaret. Thus you would have a
grandson (Roger Corbet) of John Burlegh and Alice Grey marrying a
great-great-great-granddaughter (Elizabeth Hopton).
