Tidbits in Nichols' _Leicestershire_

I noticed the two items below in John Nichols, _History and Antiquities
of Leicestershire_, vol. 2, part 2,

p. 473

This is a pedigree chart of the Andrews family of Stretton Magna, taken
from the Heraldic Visitation of 1683. The tree begins with a Fabian
Andrews, descended from the Andrews family of Rutland, who had a son
"Edward Andrews, of Stretton Parva, co. Leic. attorney-at-law." His
wife was "Elizabeth, dau. of ... Higginson, of Cleybroke." They had an
only child, Anne Andrews, wife of Bartholomew Perkins, of Little
Wigston.

I think the Rev. Francis Higginson of Salem, Mass., was from Claybrook,
Leicestershire. Descendants of that family may find this "of
interest."

vol. 2, part 2, p. 891 ("Additions to Gartre Hundred"):

P. 471. In the British Museum (Ayscough's Catalogue 790. 2. p.6.) is
"A brief abstract of the arraignment of nine witches at Northampton,
July 21, 1612; six of them for torturing Elizabeth Belcher, wife of
Dabriscourt Belcher, esq. and William Avery her brother; the other
three for killing two pullets and one cow, and for bewitching a mare."

The name Dabriscourt or Dabridgecourt Belcher rang a bell, as I thought
I remembered seeing it in an article in NEHGR 60 (1906) by J. Gardner
Bartlett on "The Belcher Families in New England." On pp. 127-28,
Bartlett discusses the immigrant Edward1 Belcher of Boston:

"Mr. Edward Belcher, gent., fourth son of William and Christian
(Dabridgecourt) Belcher of Guilsborough, Northamptonshire, England, was
born about 1595 ... His pedigree is recorded in the Visitations of
Warwickshire and Northamptonshire in 1619. ... In his will he calls
himself 'Edward Belcher, gent., of Boston, late of Guilsborough,
Northamptonshire, England.' As the witnesses to the will were doubtful
whether or not he was of sound mind, the will was not allowed, and his
son was appointed administrator of his estate, on Mar. 17, 1672-3.
(Suffolk Co. Probate)."

Mr. Edward Belcher has (or had in 1906) descendants through his son
Edward2, as Bartlett notes on p. 128 : "[t]he only descendants that
now exist of Edward1 Belcher of Boston derive their descent through the
daughters of Mark and Faith (Belcher) Pilkington." See NEHGR 108:181.

I can verify that this William Belcher and Christian Dabridgecourt
appear in the 1619 Visitation of Warwickshire (I checked, once, when I
had a copy handy). I seem to remember that several generations of both
Belchers and Dabridgecourts were easily traceable.

Warwickshire may prove a more fruitful venue for a search of this
family than Northamptonshire, for the following reasons:

1. The extracted IGI shows these records at Solihull, Warwickshire --

William Belcher and Mrs. Christian Dabrigcourte, 13 Sept. 1580

Dabrigecourte Belcher and Mrs. Elizabethe Fissher, 11 March 1598

2. _V.C.H. Warwickshire_, 4:176 (discussing the manor of Chilvers
Coton) says, "The manorial rights, however, seem to have been retained
by the Crown until 1562, when the manor of Chilvers Coton, late
belonging to the preceptory of Balsall, was granted to Thomas
Dabridgecourt. His granddaughter Christian married William Belcher,
who died in 1609, when she and her son Dabridgecourt Belcher sold the
manor to Walter Giffard, who transferred it in 1629 to Richard
Chamberlain."
