Medievel Bowens

Legg inn av Charlotte Adams » 12 mai 2005 13:11:04

I am hoping that someone out there can help me sort out some information
concerning the early Bowens-I have been using some information from the
sources listed below and have come across a copy of Carl Boyers book
Medieval Welsh Ancestors of Certain Americans that seems to have most of the
same information just not in the same order as the other sources. For
confusion sake I have only copied what concerns my line and was hoping for
some help in sorting all of this out.
Thank You

1.Annals and Antiquities of Wales -The county Families of Pembrokeshire, pg
895
2.The name and Family of Bowen compiled by the Media Research Bureau of
Washington DC,
3.A Tale of ap Owain's ap Owen's & Bowen's-A Project of The Bowen Family
Web.

From the combined sources listed above-

1. Gwynfardd Dyged-Poet and Prince
2. Cyhylyn Prince of Dyled m-Gwrangen dau of Sir Tristram, Comes or Earl of
Worcester
3. Gwrwared of Cemaes m-Gwenllian daugh of Ednyfed Fychan Councillor and
General of Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth of North Wales
4. Gwilym ap Gwrwared m-Joan, daugh of Sir Leonard Stackpool of Stackpool,
Pembrokeshire There is an inline note here in the Annals and Antiquities
book that states "some pedigrees repeat Gwrwared and Gwilym, which is an
obvious mistake."
5. Einion Vawr "o'r Coed" (meaning "of the wood") Boyer has Einon o'r Coed
as the 5th son of #4 below (pg 183) and has Einon Fawr o'r Tywyn as the son
of Gwilym ap Gwrwared (#8 in Boyer book) m-Dido daugh of Cadwgan Dhu, Lord
of Aberporth.
6. Owen ap Einion m-Gwenllian daugh of Sir William Cantington of Trewilym.
7. Llewelin ap Owen m-Nest daugh of Howell Fychan.
8. Evan Bowen (the first to use the Bowen name) m-Margaret daugh of Arnold
of Hubberston. I have found an article by the Media Research Bureau that
states as follows "Evan ap Owen, the 2nd son of Llewelyn and Nest is said to
have married Margaret of Hubberston but to have had NO ISSUE and to have
been succeeded by his NEPHEW Gwylym the son of his brother Owen.
9. Gwilym Bowen m-Agnes verch James ap Einion of Henllan
10. Owen Bowen Esq and Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1544 m-Janett daugh of
John ap Harry ap Llewelyn Esq. of Gumfreyston.
11 Sir James Bowen m 1st Jane Perott 2nd Mary Herle daugh of John Herle
Esq. and Margaret daugh of Gruffydd ap Nicolas of Newton
12. Matthias Bowen Esq. m-Mary daugh of John Philips, Esq. son of Sir Thomas
Philips of Picton.
13 James Bowen Esq, Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1622 m-Elenor daugh of John
Griffith Esq of North Wals, son of Sir William Griffith of Penrhyn 17
Children- This is supposedly the father of Richard Bowen who died in
Rehoboth Feb 4 1674/75.

Boyers Work This starts on pg 182 of his book.

1. Gwynfardd Dyfed
2. Cuhelyn Fardd
3. Gwrwared Gerdd Gemell ap Cuhelyn Fardd ap Gwynfardd Dyfed of Cemais
4. Gwilym m-Annes ferch Seisyll ap Llawrodd Dyfed 2nd daugh of Madog ap Rhys
ap Madog 3rd unkown-it is here that lists Einion o'r Coed (would be the half
brother of #5)as Gwilym's first son with his 3rd wife. It states he had
issue but does not show them.
5. Gwrwared m-Gwenllian ferch Ednyfed Fychan
6. Gwilym m daugh of Sir Elidir Stackpole of Stackpole Pembrokeshire
(Skipping #7 going to #8)
8. Einion Fawr o'r Tywyn m-Lleucu ferch Gruffudd ab Ednyfed Fychan 2nd Tudo
ferch Cadwgon Ddu.(This is who Annals and Antiquities has married to Einion
o'r Coed #5 above) The book lists four children, there is not an Even but
there is an Owain.
Boyers book doesn't go any further than would be directly related to me.
Another thing I find strange is look in Boyers book on page 183 the children
of #6 lists a Nest Fechan-this entry doesn't seem right to me-compare it to
#7 above.

Hi Charlotte: Richard LeBaron Bowen, Jr. wrote an extenive article in The
American Genealogist, volume 76 [October 2001], pp263-278, entitled "The
Ancestry, Wives, and Children of Richard Bowen of Weymouth and Rehoboth,
Massachusetts". It says the purported ancestry of the immigrant Richard is a
fraudulent account fabricated by E. C. Bowen in 1884.

Always optimistic--Dave
