Agnes of Saxe-Lauenburg
Europaische Stammtafeln, by the Prince von Isenburg and edited by Frank Baron Freytag von Loringhoven, Volume I 1975, Tafel 126
Wartislaw VIII, Duke of Pomerania, 1373-22/23 August 1415 married Agnes Duchess of Saxe-Lauenburg who died in 1435. No father is mentioned for her.
In the same volume Tafel 40 the family of Saxe-Lauenburg is mentioned. There is only the one Agnes mentioned. She is a daughter of Erich IV and Sofie of Brunswick. But this Agnes died before 21 December 1415 and only one husband is mentioned Albrecht II, Count von Holstein and he died 28 September 1403.
------
Europaische Stammtafeln Schwennicke, Volume III/1 Tafel 1.
Here we find Wartislaw VIII and his wife Agnes of Saxe-Lauenburg is mentioned in brackets, indicating not certain. But here is also given she died in 1435 and was a daughter of Erich IV.
Now Schwennicke Volume 1.2 Tafel 197 gives Erich IV of Saxe-Lauenburg a daughter Agnes, died circa 1415, married before 23 March 1399 Albrecht Count von Holstein who died 28 September 1403.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Is there any ground to believe that Agnes first married Albrecht von Holstein (he died in 1403) and then married Wartislaw VIII ? It may be tight, but it seems possible.
She became a widow in 1403, and had four children by Wartislaw. It is not known when the first child was born but the second was born 1405/1407, the third in 1408/1410.
Wartislaw is interesting as an ancestor of Prince William of Wales, the Red Baron (Manfred von Richthofen) Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, Brooke Shields, King Juan Carlos of Spain and many others.
With many thanks

Dear Leo,
As You observed Wartislaw IX isn`t Wartislaw VIII, but He and
his wife Sophie of Sachsen- Lauenburg were parents of Duke Eric II of
Pomerania- Wolgast b 1425 who married Sophie of Pomerania- Stolp, daughter of Duke
Bogislaw IX of Pomerania- Stolp by his wife Sophie of Holstein. their son Duke
Bogislaw X reunited the Duchy of Pomerania and through his daughter Sophie of

Re: Agnes of Saxe-Lauenburg
It is also important (to me) to place Agnes with her correct parents as she
also has interesting descendants as I have already mentioned. It seems
possible that Agnes was married first to the Count of Holstein but because
it is possible it doesn't make it right to jump to that conclusion. I cannot
find another Agnes but perhaps _the_ Agnes had different parents, not Erich
IV.

Dear Leo,
My Sincere Apologies I checked further at Herbert Stoyan`s
German Nobility website and found Erich IV, Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg`s daughter
Agnes was twice married, 1st to Count Albert II, son of Henry II, Count of
Holstein-Rendsburg and Ingeborg of Mecklenburg who d in 1403, 2nd to Wartislaw

Barnim VIII b 1414-d 1451.and a daughter Sophie who married William, Prince zu

Anna of Brandenburg, daughter of Frederick, son of Elector Frederick I of

Dear Leo and others,
In my earlier Post of 5/8/2005 5:20:38 I erred
in my identification of Duke Bogislaw IX of Pomerania- Stolp`s wife whom I
gave as Sophie of Holstein. She however was Bogislaw IX`s mother and wife of
Duke Bogislaw VIII of Pomerania-Stolp. Bogislaw IX being instead married to Maria
of Mazovia, daughter of Ziemovit IV, Duke of Mazovia by his wife Alexandra,
daughter of Olgierd, Duke of Lithuania by his 2nd wife Juliana of Tver. Sophie
of Pomerania- Stolp was the daughter of Duke Bogislaw IX and Maria. Bogislaw
VIII`s wife Sophie of Holstein d 1448 was a daughter of Henry II, Count of
Holstein-Rendsburg by Ingeborg of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and a sister of Count
Albert II of Holstein as well as of Gerhard VI, Count of Holstein-Rendsburg and
Duke of Schleswig.

Edward Rymar, author of a two volume genealogy "Rodowod ksiazat
pomorskich" published in 1995-6, discusses the identification of Agnes
on p. 77 of vol. II.
If I interpret it correctly, the name Agnes comes from the Pomeranian
Chronicle of Thomas Kantzow (16th ct. ???) and her identification as
daughter of Erich IV. of Saxe-Lauenburg is given in a genealogy by
certain Wolfgang Jobst published in 1573 ("Genealogia oder Stamm und
Geburtlinia der ... Fürsten und Hertzogen in Pomern").
The major problem seems to be the identification of Agnes with the
(otherwise unnamed) wife of Albrecht of Holstein, who was also
daughter of Erich IV. - for this Rymar cites work of H. Bei der Wieden
"Schaumburgische genealogie. Stammtafeln der Grafen von Holstein und
Schaumburg...", Schaumburgische studien, vol. XIV., 1966; p. 70 and
further (as well as Schwennicke ESNF I/table 80).

Re: Agnes of Saxe-Lauenburg
Dear Leo,
It certainly appears as if Erich IV of Saxe- Lauenburg-
Ratzenburg`s daughter Agnes was the wife of Duke Wartislaw VIII of Pomerania as
well as Count Albert II of Holstein. She is referred to as Agnes of Saxe-
Lauenburg-Ratzenburg and daughter of Eric IV at Stoyan`s German Nobility site
http://www.8.informatik.uni-erlangen.de ... erson.html and both marriages are
given. It makes sense as her known children by Wartislaw VIII all seem to have
been born between 1403-1415 and She died many years after her second husband.
Her son Barnim VIII married Agnes, daughter of Count Julius of Wunstorf and
had one daughter Agnes who by Frederck the Younger, son of Elector Frederick I
of Brandenburg, had a daughter Magdalena of Brandenburg who married Eitel
Frederick II of Hohenzollern. They have many descendants. Any misinformation prior
to thisin these posts is entirely my fault. Agnes of Pomerania married 2nd in
1478 Georg II, Prince of Anhalt- Zerbst. The Pomerania 2 site at Genealogy.EU
is currently somewhat garbled, Barnim VIII being listed twice and
Saxony-Lauenburg-Ratzenburg has not yet been developed as a genealogical link.
