Attention: Rich Eaton

You kindly provided some information of the Warren
family also known as Waller.

The following in Lancashire Inquisitions (Christopher
Towneley/Roger Dodsworth) relates to the Warren
Family. It is interesting to note the many ways the
family name was spelt. You will note that Laurence
Waryng (Warren) married Margery (daughter) of Richard
Buckley of Shoadley or of Oure County Salop about
1418.

"Christopher Towneley does not seem to have been aware
of the variations which are found in the spelling of
this name. His clerk probably copied the document
before him correctly. The first mentioned name in the
following pedigree in the 44th year of Edw III by the
name of John, son of Edward "Le Garreyn" as kinsman
and heir to Isabel, daughter and heiress of Sir
Richard de Stokeport (Eton), gave surety to the
Escaetor of Cheshire; and in a fine 46 Edw III is
styled Sir John "Warren" (v.Watson). Leland wrote the
name Warine. The companian of the Conqueror, from whom
the Warrens of Poynton claimed descent, is described
in Wace as follows:

"De Garennes i vint Willeme
Mult li sist bien e chief li helme"

The Warrens were seated at Boton in the county of
Norfolk before they acquired their property in
Cheshire and Lancashire by the marriage of Sir Edward,
the father of Sir John, with Cecily, daughter and
tandem heiress of Sir Richard de Stokeport, son of Sir
Robert de Stokeport, whose wife Maud or Matilda was
one of the coheiresses of Sir Richard Fitz Roger, by
Margaret coheir with her younger sister Matilda of
Thurstan Banastre. Matilda had Appleby in
Leicestershire, to which church the priory of Lytham,
founded by Richard fitz Roger with the consent of
Margeria his wife, had a pension.

Richard fitz Roger, who was dead AD1204, appears to
have left five daughters. Matilda, wife of Robert de
Stokeport; Margaret, wife of Hugo de Morton; Quenilda,
wife of Roger Gernet, chiuef forester of Lancaster;
Avicia, wife of William de Mulun; and Amuria, wife of
Thomas de Bethum.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
